Hey Aussiewahine,

We had the same problem at the Vicco Titles with Kristi competing as there was no division for women or girls.

We just asked Max Wells from Surf Vic if she could compete against the guys and he help us out.

Women and Girls in the surf arena always seem to get the back seat.

In Sup the field should be leveled out you would think!

I am working with several women and girls down here to try to get a womens division up for next year.

Bring on the 21st century

Phill

I agree Phill
I am the dad of 2 girls who love surfing and there is not the opportunities for girls at these type of comps. Work hard as my 2 will appreciate your efforts in the future.

Swanie and Aussie,

If you dont bitch moan and drive things forward nothing changes. Some people will even dislike you for it becuase they like sacred cows and staying safe but hey, smile back it works for me!

Aussie I believe there is nothing that will get a womens / girls division faster than someone with your skill woop assing a few of the guys

They will put up a womens division faster than super glue sticks your fingers together just to stop the embarisssshment for next time.

The Girl Sup Surfers are increasing on the coast too we have seen 4 or 5 in the last few weeks in the middle of winter (water 12deg air 5deg).

The existing boards don't work for them, but I am working on solving that starting this week. Stay tuned.

There were even 2 Girls sup surfing small Bells god forbid, I thought the cliffs would cave in, surprise surprise the cliffs stayed where they were, there were no lightening strikes (that I saw), Moby Dick didnt swallow them up and the guys just gave them waves.

HMMMMMMM

Fancy that

For the last couple of years Shakira has charged with the blokes at NFOS, Malfuntion & Honolua last year I think Honolua had 3 ladies enter against the men. Only a matter of time when there will be a small division for the Ladies who want to SUP Surf.

With all the SUP clubs popping up everywhere we hope to see more ladies getting out there and competing.

I know the Noosa Beach Boy Club is planning something and heavens forbid we have a Ladies, Masters & maybe a Juniors division.

I agree guys,

We have an opportunity (or obligation???) with such a young sport to make sure the gals are amongst it right from the beginning. The ultimate outcome would be for the womens divisions to match the mens divisions (we can all dream!!!).

I would love to see the statistics, but I think there are more girls getting into SUP (as a percentage of total SUPers) than there are women as a percentage of total prone surfers?

The only way event organisers are going know that there are girls out there though, is if there are girls throwing their hat in the ring for every SUP event going (unless it specifically says 'mens' I think we need there to be girls in there flying the flag!).

That's my two cents worth!
Mel
PS - The Noosa Festival looks like a great excuse for a family road trip!

Good Question I might ask the organisers about that one.

Last year they did a 8km that Sue & I did. I know the formate has changed as there are not as many races this year.

If they get the numbers like the Honolua Ocean Race it would be great to see!!!

Don't forget a div. for over 45's when your venting, not saying I'm getting old ,but it might get a few more advanced age guys and girls involved.

All ages would still start together in the one race just positions tabulated at the finish like they do at most of these races.

Anyhoo,Moffats was great after lunch today, where was every one else???

thanks Sue.

Have your say on the Australian SUP Long Distance Nationals post.

If you want age groups we can work on what the OC1 / OC2 series works on.

Simon, I have made suggestions to both the Sth QLD Zone Organisers and to AOCRA (Aust Outrigger Canoe Racing Assoc) to have the three board categories ie. 12'6", 14' and Unlimited for both Men and Women and to also then have two age categories being Under 40 and Over 40 yrs. This is for every race in the Series this year as well as for the Nationals at Coffs.

As the sport of SUP racing grows in Aust in the next few years I then suggested adding more age categories to break it down even further eg. Under 20, 20-29, 30-39 and so on. But not this year. Just the two age categories for now. I have spoken with the Organisers of Coffs Nationals and am pretty sure they will adopt these suggestions.

Remind me next time to not put exclamation marks after my statement. My initial statement today "Only if your a bloke" was meant to be just that...an observation. Not a winge. I'm stoked for any organisation, club or event to include any kind of SUP racing in their program. The Noosa concept and race was great this year. Very enjoyable and I'm happy to do it again on a 12'6" and under board. Especially seeing it's only 5km in varying conditions (river, rough bar, ocean, wave catching). This particular race is better suited for shorter boards IMO. I don't think I'd really like to try and pound through the Noosa Bar on a 16' race board. Leave that to the blokes !! ....Woops... did it again

But remember the outriggers only have age categories being Open, Masters 35, Snr Masters 45, Golden Masters 55. They don't then have canoe categories based on different length canoes like we do in Stand Up.

Our Main categories are the 3 different board lengths and then I think age categories if there are enough competitors. Who knows..maybe for Coffs Nationals there will be enough to introduce age categories. I think we are lucky to just have them except our three board categories this year. We are slowly progressing.

I think there will be quite a few girls with unlimited boards by the time Noosa comes around, so maybe we should push for an unlimited division too. If we have race boards that we can use in other races I don't see why we should be excluded from this event. If the blokes are allowed to race on the bigger boards, we should be able to too. I don't really want to be racing 5kms on my 9'3".

It would be great if they could have a womens surfing division too, but the numbers of women who've entered the last few major events can't really justify it so as it stands i'd be happy to have a crack at surfing against the boys (if it wasn't so expensive!) but racing against them is a different story and we wouldn't stand a chance.

I will take it to the organiser of this event. I think if they get a couple of ladies say at least 6 you might all be in a heat together - could be a straight final. But remember this is just an add on so I would just be happy that you have the chance to race.

I know from previous years if you do more that 2 events you get a discount.

I have emailed the Mal club about adding the Ladies Unlimited & Ladies SUP Surf Heat and when I hear back I will let you know.

I would start trying to get a good following now (Ladies) as if they don't get the numbers they will pull the divisions that have the least attendance.

I can't see why anyone who loves a surf wouldn't take this opportunity if Jodie has success. When else could you surf somewhere like Noosa with only 6 others and on the best spot?

SUP Surfing which is classed as a speciality event $132.00

The 5 km Race is $88 I think for Juniors it is a little cheaper.

Hey Jodie,

We have friends at Noosa who we haven't visited for ages so we will definitely make the trip and i'll do the womens paddle race (5km shouldn't kill me???). And if you want numbers for a women's sup surf you can count me in since we will be coming anyway!

Mel give me a bell when you get up here (I think Jason has our number) and I can take you for a paddle on the race course and give you some tips on where the tide flows and a good fast way to get out through the river mouth.

I just entered Woogie for both events $220.00 I am going to go in a visit Phil tomorrow and get the low down on when the SUP surfing will be and ask about the discount for 2 or more events.

Hey Starlet - the word pro just means that there is money up for this event - that is why the enter is also so expensive.

Hey Jodie,

Thanks for the offer of the rundown on the race course and the rivermouth. I would be extremely grateful! It is quite a few years since we have been to Noosa but I remember it being gorgeous so I am really looking forward to getting out on the SUP and exploring.

I do remember hiring a tinnie and going up the river seeing the cutest houseboat ever: it was a little weatherboard thing with a picket fence around the verandah! Looked like it had just been plucked off a farm and put on a pontoon!

Sounds like there's already a couple of others showing interest in a womens surf event so good luck with the organisers. If you get it up & running let me know.

Look forward to meeting in person!
Mel
