Today Oliver and I got some real waves for a change.

We meet at The Pines and saw little two foot waves and thought I wonder what Flinders is like.

We hit Flinders and it was closer to two meters there... Now that's what I call man size waves.

We had our best sech yet with some big sets coming through with 8' faces.

Here's a couple of pics that I took of Oliver catching a mid sized wave.

I got some nice waves at Big Left on Saturday morning. It's amazing how the little swells jack up to 6-8' with a vertical drop, then mellow out to something more ridable as they pass over the outer reef, then reform and reform and reform ... :-)

I don't know why more SUP-ers don't use Big Left. It's a perfect SUP wave except for a fairly critical, but easy, takeoff. You can't just sneak into the little swells early, you have to take them fairly late.

Paddling out through the reefs from the bottom car park is easy and the paddle in through the lagoon is a great way to relax at the end of a session.

It was my first surf since November (after a summer of kiteboarding and paragliding and the occasional flat water paddle). I felt like a complete kook at first so I paddled up to the Blowhole and back to get my sea legs back. When I got back most of the surfers had gone so I could take my pick of the waves. I've tried to surf the many peaks up that way but I'm worried about plastering myself on the reef.

Loved your travelogue DJ, & it almost made me want to go to Vic for a holiday to try some different waves, but, bless the internet, I did a quick search on Google maps to find out where Barwon Heads is (only been to Melbourne twice & not to surf), & remembered that you guys are waaaayyyy south of our southernmost point in WA (& I don't go anywhere near Albany in winter ), & then I found this great little point-and-click CSIRO SST (sea surface temperature) site: www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/web_point/
Maybe I'll head there one summer (yeah, I know, I'm a wuss).........................

That second photo turned out great. Can you send me a copy please? My kids think I look semi pro in it.

50% of the time now I get everything right on the take off and you managed to capture it. What a great sunny Melbourne Autum day it was.... I'm still buzzing from this morning - we caught some great waves.

I also thought Gorgo captured what it was like at Big Left, the takeoff is a bit tricky but when you are on, you've got the greenroom to yourself and can just enjoy trying to position yourself for the next reformation.

You mean like Will Ferrell in "Semi Pro" the movie? Just kidding!

Myself and a mate Scott surf Big Left a bit. Scott broke his board there on a real big day when he got smashed by 4 super big waves. I was on the 2nd wave that got him and saw the look on his face, hilarious although I was a bit worried for him.

It is a good wave but is pretty fickle, one day it's good and the next it can be terrible. I usually park at the top car park though and walk down the hill. Hard work!

It was a great day.. Oliver got the wave of the day.. and seconds later got the wipe-out of the day..

It was a huge wave and I was thinking back off Oliver.. You don't want that one.. He went for it.. It jacked up even bigger.. He made the drop and bounced out on the bottom turn and did a big flying belly wacker before getting pounded.

I gave him the thumbs up for that one..

Here's a few more shots from today.. Every time I had my camera out and a big set would roll through I'd put it away and paddle to get over them or catch one.. I caught some beauties.

This was looking back towards Phillip Island from Flinders.

This shot is the first of three (the other two first posted).

Oliver took my camera so he could get a shot of me and the waves stopped.. They do that.. .. I had a bum bag around my waist that I could put my camera in when not using it.

This is driving out past the golf course and looking back down at Big Left (where we'd been).
