at the alley. just a word to newish sup users at the alley.

please don't enter the middle of the lineup unless____________

you can read the crowd and have surf knowledge. part of this means being able to plot out a course that avoids situations as much as possible

can take off on a wave and have control of your craft. this applies to long time surfers who are learning sup in particular. you can see they have surfed but haven't taken the time to 'learn sup'. spent months first up staying away from others- you can experiment till your hearts content on what works, what doesn't

your prepared to turn your head left and see if some one is inside

you can turn off a wave

you can paddle on to a wave standing up,not on your knees calling waves!!!!!!!! this i can't even believe someone could have the gall to even do it

i am appalled at what i am seeing. i can only imagine what other surfers are thinking.

i don't usually get into these type of posts and don't want to make a issue out of it and then have the trolls zero in and i'm not trying to be a big shot , but i would like to see sups co exist with others at the alley now and in the future.

ps i can't bring myself to have a 'chat' out in the line up about these matters

Not just SUPs with no clue out there mate. I took my 8 year old for a surf this afternoon and a surf boat crew from bondi launched their boat straight off the beach, paddled into the break and were taking off on the peak right amongst the 30 or so surfers out there. I put my young bloke into a set and these clowns turned their boat around, took a late drop and after the sweep snapped his oar came within an inch of taking his head off. Can't say I had a "quiet" talk to them though and my young bloke might have learnt a few new expletives for school next week. Two of them did come and apologise to us in the car park later and I think they'll be looking for a new sweep

With the increase in popularity and the relative ease of learning it is only a matter of time until something serious happens.

I agree that surfers learning to SUP do have a head start as they can read the lineup, BUT surfing a SUP is completely different to a short board. The biggest difference is that on a SUP you actually have to move your feet unlike a short board where you pop up on your feet and that's about it.

I have seen a couple of things over the last few weeks that I have been scared to watch. A couple of Sundays ago, first bit if swell we had had in a while, probably 30-40 suppers and the same amount of surfers. I saw two people paddle out on brand new boards (still had the sale stickers on) over 10" and no leashes.

It's not only up to people out in the water to have a chat, but all the retailers and anyone who sells a board. It takes 2 mins of your time and could save someone a lot of pain.

Can't believe so many think its ok or just plain don't know that it is not acceptable not to wear a leggie............SUPS, longboards or short boards.

I was out there this arvo as well and decided to go in when I saw the Bondi surf boat crew come out into the lineup.

Those blokes take up a heap of space and usually tell us to get out of the way while you are standing waiting for a wave.

Lacey..... got agree with you here as I had to educate a couple of couple of guys on Atlantis sups during the week out there with no leggies and blinkers on .

Think they had crook necks as they couldn't look left.

Best one I have seen was at Trigg. Gumby head down paddled for the usual close out and wiped out. 11 foot board on 12 foot leggie decimated 20 people. He quickly jumped up paddled back out. So I went over and had a chat. Response was what are you talking about??? Gave up as would have to deck him to get him to understand.

Seek pleasure on the mountain these days. Less congestion.

Bit sad really

Know how you feel Hilly, some people just think they know better and wont listen regardless.

Also understand the draw of the trails but wait until you get a chance to ride some real mountains!

Needless to say that day in question I took my 12'6 out and paddled the other way to get some waves on my own until everyone else realised how much fun I was having and they decided to join me. It's funny hearing surfers who are riding sups say how stable and easy they are to ride but spend half their time in the water or sitting/laying down. Then when they paddle for a wave and miss it or fall off they think it is hilarious.

The fun is in the learning. Still a gumby on a mtb. Great time with the lids as we are learning together.

The alley or SA local reefs its all the same deal

And don't forget just because you can catch every wave that comes near you it doesn't mean you have too - share them around with the shorties learners and others you greedy fockers - dont be a pig kook - you all know who you are.

I am often embarrassed to say I SUP to fellow shortboarders these days when I'm out on my shortie

I've also been a bit worried about folks hanging about directly 'downwave' of those further out... there's nothing worse than paddling for one to find someone has parked themselves right in your line. Frustrating at best, goddamn dangerous at worst.

That said, the number of times I've been out with SUPers i dont even know and they call waves for me, given a 'woop-woop' when they see i have a good 'un, or have said 'stay on' if we are both catching the same wave and I start to bail out cos its not mine, is bloody brilliant and wonderful and half the reason i love SUP.

If you're somewhere where it isnt carnage, giving up a wave or two in the interests of spreading the love aint that hard. All IMHO anyway...

Here's my rant- at the alley this morning in only 1 - 2 ft waves and there were at least 20 sups crowding the take off point of which I counted only 3 had leg ropes ( a cardinal sin as far as i'm concerned ) & 90% did not have any control of their boards ( ie couldn't stand up for any period of time without falling off, prone or knee paddling into waves), I saw at least a dozen collisions...crazy stuff.

What time was this? we were out early training but everyone who trains with us in the waves MUST have a legrope on. I think 2ft might be stretching it as well i would say 0-1ft!!

Maybe things got crazy after we left!!

It was not the roar crew as this was mid to late morning at the alley. The surf picked a bit from the earlier 1 ft and there was the odd wave which could be ridden from the rocks to laceys. The funniest thing I saw was a chick on a new naish having a lot of trouble finally give up and hand her paddle to her partner to hold and then proceeded to prone surf through the crowd wiping out and taking others in the path of destruction- crazy suppers...all I can say is that I am thankful I took the Laguna 10' for the small conditions as it survived 2x collisions with people dropping in at critical moments....the tuff lite construction just got a bit of scuff and wax on it whereas the drop ins were left looking at their boards wondering how much their boards were going to cost to repair.
