Hi all,
Just got a new SUP and carbon Paddle (quatro 10'4 twinfin version) and now need to get it ready for a paddle,

Need to cut down the paddle to length, but dont wanna cut it too short (or long for that matter)

I have heard heeps of different opinnions about this from, two closed fists higher than your head, A full hand span, Two full handspands, your hieght + half a foot. but i dono wich one is right.

any advice would be great.

cheers

Hi Jord

you are right there are ten thousand different formula's for what height to make a paddle.

Ultimately it comes down to what length feels comfortable for you. If you have used other paddles in the past eg demoed or used friend's ones get an idea from those lengths and adjust accordingly.

If you have not tried any others, do what I did. Start with a really cheap plastic paddle ($50) and cut it to the size you think you want and try it out. If it fits cut your expensive nice paddle to that length.

Take into account different blade shapes and use (more surfing v distance paddling) as well.

cheers

Most of the recommendations I'v seen are 8" above head height for surfing and 10" for paddling. Mines at 8" for surfing. You could also go to the various paddle maker sites as they give advice as well.

Cut it longish, and use gaffa tape to make a temporary fix of the handle to the shaft.

Demo

Adjust length if too long.

Demo

Repeat.

Don't go too short for an all around paddle.

Yeah, I am with DownWind on this one.............Some gaffa tape wrapped around the handle and then pushed in the end of the shaft will make a tight enough fit to keep the water out while trying various lengths. After you have the handle pushed in, just a couple of more wraps around the outside will get you on your way. As mentioned by others, the length for everybody is a very personal thing.

I have found electrical tape to be really good when bound onto the paddle. I have used some paddles for months like this.

I currently favour quite a short paddle for the surf, perhaps 3-4 inches above head height.

Enjoy the experiment of gradually shortening you paddle to your perfect height.

Later on you may consider a paddle for the surf and one for longer paddles.

I'm using 8" over for surf and 12" over for flat water.

I heard that Dave Kalama is using 15" over.. Jeez he must have arms like a gorilla..

Maybe it's from all the windsurfing that he did..

Hey Jords. Long time no see. How have you been and what have you been up to?
Anyway I find that having your paddle/shaft meet your eye level to be the best length for an all round paddle length.
