I have a mistral pacifico that I enjoy paddling around in small waves. The board came with what appears to be a fairly basic Naish paddle (alu shaft and t-grip, white FRP blade). It's the "typical" longish narrow shape.

I've noticed that a few of the other guys have paddles that appear to be a lot more spoon shaped, i.e wider and shorter.

What are the merits of the various shapes, and is one shaper better at some things than others (e.g. wave riding versus long distance paddling).

Personally I'd like a paddle that gets me off the mark a bit quicker. what should I save up for?

IMO..more long and narrow is better that short and fat... I'm talking about paddles..

But having said that, JB tells me that the new Naish paddles are short and fat.. So who knows.. ..I'm looking forward to trying one.

There are some great paddles out there now and you need to try before you buy..They all have a different feel and flex.

I like Kialoa paddles because that's what I use and I'm used to them.. I have nothing against other brands.

This is the Shaka Pu'u named after the famous Mel Pu'u..(an Hawaiian lifesaver and SUP'er).

Here's a pic of my paddle that I was using today..btw I took this pic just today.
