Why do i keep hiting my rails, Not with the blade but the shaft

Maybe this is part of the reason i am getting so much yaw?

Diging into the water to much rather than quick licks

maybe you have the shaft at to much of an angle. your paddle should be somewhere vert in the paddle stroke. this will stop you from smacking across the rails and you should find the board will paddle straighter. but that's a more advanced paddling technique. no worries with the q's, but it gonna take time paul. sorry about that. in 2 weeks you'll be a lot better, than a month- starting to get a bit more solid over all. the art of paddling takes a while to be good at it. 18 months of a lot of paddling and i'm starting to go well in events and catching up with some of the better paddlers around, but mate, i couldn't even guess the hours i've put in,and watching paddlers/oc crew, questions asked, trail and error. even watching good paddlers doesn't help if you don't know what you are looking at/for. stick with it
cheers

I think i just panic a little when going for the wave, And then once on the wave i have to adjust my brain to use the paddle.

Time and more time i guess, Had a awsome time today got quite a few waves and paddled about with out falling off and even paddled back out over the wash

Dam this is so adictive

BP maybe spend some time in flat water . Don't think it helps with 31" wide board ether .Time on the water & you'll come right.

My board is full of marks too but I've worked out looking at other people that with positioning my lower hand a bit lower on the shaft I get a better control of the paddle movement and then not to hit the rail so often.

Also with yawing, there's no point paddling past your ankle each side too (or at least not too many times in a row while catching a wave) as this will rotate the board for sure.
It is easy to produce a linear movement with our arms for each side from the front to our ankles but once the paddle reaches your ankles your opposite arm cant go any further (normally...) and the body start twisting... I believe that torsion is conducted to the board through our body and feet, I think it must twist/yaw the board at that point.

I see, Yes i think this is the case as now and then i panic when the wave comes and sometime just pull myself over the front of the board so i am for sure pulling well past my ankles.

Next time im out i will keep this in mind, Would love to go out today but the body is saying no.

Hey BP,

When your trying to catch small waves most people step back onto the tail as they feel the board lift onto the wave. This causes the board to stall out and you fall off the back of the wave.

Try to take your initial step or 1/2 step forward in small waves as it gets foward momentum and accelerates the board down the face.

Most people think you will sink the nose and pearl but i doubt that will happen with the 9'5 naish.

Once it starts to motor step back to parralel and then onto the tail.
