After the weekend Classic Paddle and notification of upcoming events I have been in contact with Canoeing WA to discuss having a SUP category in more of their events.

For the Mandruah Classic Paddle on 21 November there is no designated category for SUP's yet, but was told if 10 or so guys put their hands up they will put us in.

They are keen to have us included in events going forward so I thought this was a perfect opportunity to start getting names of guys who are interested and possibly getting us involved in more events.

If any one is keen let me know.

The Canoeing WA web page is great and has heaps of events over the summer. So even if you pick one and get enough guys together they are happy to accomodate us. Here is the link to their events calendar www.wa.canoe.org.au/wp-content/uploads/old-files/wa/downloads/CWA%20Online%20Calendar%2029%20Oct.pdf

Reagan, I looked at the Mandurah Classic and it is 14km! While it is a downwinder I think you need a dedicated downwind board for that distance to make it fun?

The reason being because I noticed last weekend that I was level pegging with Luke on his Naish Glide (?) on the first leg into the wind, but that he absolutely took off on the downwind leg to Rocky Bay. Put over 200 metres on me before the turn back. No way I could keep up on my big wide banana.

I'm keen on having a bash at another race, would only be looking at the genuine downwinders though. Into the wind legs or extended cross wind legs are no fun. The Mandurah one looks good, don't like the look of the Bay 2 Beach.
Bit reluctant to commit to the Rotto one as 28km's means a long time to be on your feet in the open ocean. Might have to do a few Freo to Scarb's to see how my endurance holds up.

Sorry, just checked my mental calender, wife is having baby number 3 on the 21st. Count me out for that one.
Looks like a great run along the coast when you check it out on Google Earth. Didn't realise the coast runs so SW-NE. I'm envious now!

I have it in my head that someone mentioned 28km for the Rotto paddle, is this correct? Doesn't look that much on the Goggle map. Looks around 15ish. Anyone know the distance.

Rotto race is now to Hillarys instead of Scarbs which gives it the extra 5km. The Mandurah race looks the ducks nuts, count me in.
I'm willing to lend out my S/board 11'2 to make up the numbers if someone wants a longer board for the day.

The 2010 race is 28kms from Rotto to Hillary's. This years race was 24kms from Rotto to Scarbs.
28kms is a long way!!
Anyone planning on going in?

Seen my mistake, looking at miles rather than km.

I see they list Ledge point to Lancelin.
Smith beach to Bunkers bay, the perfect race for Greenroom with all those surfbreaks in between.
Adam,I plan on doing the Rotto race next year ,was looking at the ledge race but its the week before.

Hey Reagan,

Thanks for starting to get some races organised for us in WA. Is this the start of the first SUP club in the west?

I'm definately in for doing some more of these coastal or river runs.

Yes it is the same weekend as the windsurfing event.
The Ledge to Lano would be a good warm up for the Rotto to Hillarys.
I will be doing the Rotto to Hillarys but only if I can get a board.
Its a great race if your super competitive but I want to do it just to say I did it as you can never get the chance to do it otherwise.

Thats my way of thinking Greeny. I'll only have the 11'2" so it'll be hard to be competitive anyway. What board are you going to try and get your hands on?

Hey Stuart.
Could you go on a diet of pies and beer before then.
The missus keeps on pointing out that you beat me on your 11'2.
Makes it hard for me to justify the new board.

At least you stayed upright paddling all the way into the wind. I weakened and prone paddled through that gusty section if I stayed standing up I would have been going backwards

Yeah I did notice that most of the events would in the more serious paddler/open ocean board categories and for a 12km event you really need a minimum 12'6 board to have fun.

But nonetheless keep putting suggestion out there and I definitely agree the Ledge Point Race would be a good warm up for the Rotto Race.

I have to chat to the Caneoing WA guys again to see if it is possible to have a shorter course for an event such as the Mandurah Classic Paddle (say 6km). I think, given the infancy of racing in WA, keeping events in the shorter distance category will encourage more people to give it a shot rather than putting forward marathon type events first up.

Am open to any thoughts and suggestions because at the end of the day most of us are pretty new to this sort of thing anyway. Would be good to get some thoughts/ experiences from guys/wahines over east?

Anyway it is almost beer o'clock and after my day today I need one or several.

I would be thinking the Ledge to Lano has a lot more cross shore type wind.

Not sure if we have the numbers for us to have a race on Saturday (Reagan?) but I'm going to head down there and do a downwinder if anyone wants to join me. I plan on going from Falcon Bay to Doddies Beach which is about 7km. Aiming to leave about 2.30 but will check the conditions as it gets closer. If anyone is interested let us know so we can organise vehicles and maybe fire up the barbie for some snaggers at the end.
Cheers

Sounds good Luke, at this stage it is a preliminary yes from me but have to get sign off from the boss (aka my wife). Conditions look good moderate southerly blowing.

I'm in Karratha and should be heading down for the Rotto
I'm always up for a paddle in the West so count me in
It is getting expensive to rock up to the East Coast events. By the way thanks to Scott from Greenline for putting the race on at the Surf Stock, its a pity we didnt get more punters
