My son has recently taken up skateboarding. I was talking to him about pecking order on the skate ramps. I told him that in the surf goat boards are the lowest form of life with sup a close second. Anyway, he put them in this order. Thinking about it I reckon sups are like rip sticks - kind of new and nerdy.

skate boards
bmx
scooters
rip sticks (those one wheeled skateboards that are getting around)

Oliver,
There was a guy "surfing" the points up here the other day in some kind of surf kayak type thing that resembled a clog (you know, those wooden Dutch shoes) except it was made of kevlar and he thought he was ripping. Surely he rates somewhere around Goat Boat and what about Lids? At least you Supping guys stand up.......

I will never give a goat boarder or a jet skier respect..... unless the goat boarder had a bull shark injury that prevented him/her from pursuing some other form of surfing and they are using their goat board on one leg or are paraplegic.

Jet skiers deserve nothing. Hate is a very strong word but I can honestly say that I hate all of them. Except for the ones that tow Laird Hamilton or the ones taking documentary evidence, but I'm even sus on those guys motives.

LOL Oliver, mate i once had this sh-t mind set for years, something regarding the old surfer againist anyother thing that tryed to venture out the back, mate we would give them sh-t,I"ve gone through the shortboard v longboard/goatie/boogie!For years now.At my age i now see the surfer v SUP going on in and out of the surf. But longboarding now has hit its straps and respected in one of the most out of control breaks on the eastcoast!

SUP,is not nerdy it is the start of a new sport (IN AUSTRALIA)anyway!

Oliver keep the hard hat/pads on the young fella, its a lot harder when up come upstuck at the skate park v water!

Whatever you do, keep ya kids off the scooters. They are taking over Frankston skate park and doing my head in. They don't understand the rules of riding bowls cos they haven't been brought up on a skateboard. Those rip-stick things should be burnt.

Also tow in surfing is so fun. Thats the only good use of a jetski. I never thought I'd surf anything over 6 foot until I got towed into some monsters! Probably one of the biggest rushes of my life so far.

Stuey,

I think you know that would never happen.

Jet skiers are very unlikely to help anyone in distress - even if it is someone close to their pecking order in the ocean (amputee goatboarders for example) They are far too interested in tearing up and down the beach - burning up the worlds resources, making lots of noise and spoiling everyone elses enjoyment. What I hate about them most is their "christian like" blank smiling faces as they tear past you.

Oli - what a disappointing closed minded attitude you have.

I don't jet ski and never have, and have to say they have no place on a crowded surf break. But I still respect what some guys can do on them. Saw a guy the other day doing backies off waves, respect for that.

A very good old mate of mine was a goat boater, QLD champ at one stage, and was also a pretty good surfboard and wind surfer shaper in his day. I got asked to help out at the Aussie titles 15+ years ago. Now these guys ripped, they were one of the first craft other than a wind surfer that I saw doing real airs on a wave, back then there were only a couple of pro surfers startin to get airs dialed (guys like Potts and Matt Archibald). And they have been around a bloody long time.

What you need to remember is SUP is the newest kid on the Aussie surfing block, which puts us at the bottom of the pecking order for a while. And the one way to get SUP less liked than it already is, is to not respect those that have been riding waves, no matter what craft, for longer and harder than others. I have seen this lack of respect from kite surfers against wind surfers, many of them forgetting that their sport came out of wind surfing and was developed through the work of many wind surf based companies. That has grown to some niggle between the two groups, don't let it happen here.

And for the record, my leggie broke a while back and a get skier brought my board back to me. With out his help I would have had a very long swim with paddle in hand. Maybe show other waters users equal respect and you will be surprised what you are shown in return.

There are actually several disabled surfing foundations that do exactly that. They put quadriplegics on boards and take them out surfing. Usually there is some high profile pro surfer hanging of the back of the board doing the paddling and steering.

Sports that have a pecking order have a serious self-image problem. In most of the "good" sports the better guys look after the less experienced. That's why they're called "sports". The only "pecking" that needs to be done is when a less experienced person is going to put themselves and others in direct danger.

Thats all we had at skate parks when I was growing up.

In the surf it was either shortboard, longboard or boogie board.

And as far as pole or teabag, polies have the upper hand

There's a thread on the kite forum where I argue that kiters have to look after our pole boarding brothers because they are so slow and unmanouverable.

I've been helped by a surfer after my kite went down in fairly heavy surf and I've helped kiters and sailboarders in after gear malfunctions. It's what you do. Part of all these "extreme" sports is working together and gaining karma points. You never know when you are going to need them.

Everything has its place...the only ones that don't deserve respect are those that don't respect the rules of the lineup....Boogers used to be notorious for paddling inside everyone...logs and goat boats can be wave hogs...thats why they loose respect

The concept of "snaking" is relatively new. In the past going deep was how you got waves. It's just that boogers were able to go deeper than anybody else, although they rarely made it out of the wash.

When lineups got more crowded paddling on the inside became more frowned on. It's quite common now for multiple guys to take off on the same wave gambling that the guy on the inside will not make it through.

We still have the problem where the "best" surfer takes off deeper and further out than everybody else (or later and further in) and gets all the good waves. They have no more right to surf all the good waves than anybody else.

Jetskis are so lame its funny Sure they have there place for tows & rescues, but at a crowded beach they are gay

My kx 450 would be just as lame on a crowded beach, stinking up the place noisy, scaring people, on a motox track its the coolest thing around

Horses for courses, people go to the beach for reasons, such as being really close to raw mother nature, not to see some clown thinking there cool stinking up all over the place near swimmers and surfers on a water motorbike

I hate em And boogers are so much lower in the pecking order than sups It goes like this in my world, shortboards, then sups, then everything else after that

I would be happy for jet skiers to be out right banned. I was down in Inverloch on the weekend and the noise pollution and distress they were causing to the hundreds of other beach users was disgraceful. I'm glad they've been banned in Western Port Bay and more councils should get tough on those inconsiderate waterbogans. I don't really have a problem with goat boaters - they're harmless and besides it's good having someone else on a lower echelon when I'm in the surf on my sup.

there's enough room for everyone...

jetski's don't ruin overcrowded beaches.. the idiot on the jetski ruins overcrowded beaches.
tow in surfing when its too big to paddle and too much water washing around is awesome, and one foot days over on the back beach out of everyones way before the wind comes up are a total hoot.

if you want to ban anything or put something on the bottom of a list put idiots there...

but maybe the definition of an idiot is just a matter of perspective

like maybe this guy, in those pants...?

Meanwhile...

Here in Melbourne they are about to turn a great little swimming beach into a Jetskiing only beach with no swimming alowed... That seems a bit odd doesn't it.

That is odd DJ, most people up here want rid on them from our beachs,as Doc said, great for tow ins along back beach otherwise they bugger the day up for others, respect each other i say!

But in saying that, the rules state you must stay 30 metres away from swimmers, been a while since i past my ski test!
