Anyone wanna share their opinion on this one? Looking at buying my very experienced waterman husband a board for downwind. He's 6'4" and 100kg. Very experienced in downwind on an OC1 and one of the best steerers in OC6 (12 Molokai crossings). I know the Penetrator has a huge wait list. At present he surfs a 10'6" C4, a Kalama Southpoint or my 11'2" Laguna Bay. David and others..what's your thoughts. Are there other downwind boards that are worth mentioning.

Hi aussiewhaine. There are the Dale Chapman 16 and the Starboard Point (14'8") as well as the ones you mentioned. I don't think there are too many people around who would have paddled more than one of these boards to be able to compare. Is this for racing or just recreational use?

hey aussiewahine,
We have paddled a few downwind boards and can give some feedback (even if its a bit biased because the penetrators are made here in Noosa).
The penetrators are the fastest boards we have paddled so far. Compared to the C4 14 ft Vortice which were demoed at the noosa festival in March, they glide quite a bit quicker once you get moving.
Saying that, if you are doing lots of paddling in bigger open ocean swells, the smaller 14 footer seems a bit more manouverable and the advantage of the extra length of the penetrator would be reduced as more turning and manouvering is involved.

the penetrator won the marathon at the noosa fetsival as well.

Havent had much time on the other boards mentioned so cant comment there.
if you have any more q's about the penetrator, let me know.

and last time i checked there wasnt a wait list for the boards. It usually takes them about 4 weeks to knock one up for you. They sometimes have stock and second hand ones lying around as well.

hope that helps.

Hey aussiwahine the others have much more experience with these big boards so I can only guess as to what's best.

Just wondering..Do you plan to buy a board for your husband without him knowing (if so he's a lucky bugger)..If not I would recommend running this by him because it's a very big deal..IMO..and I'm sure he would want to have some say in it.

If he's not going to be that much into racing but would just like a good board for down-winders I would choose between the C4 'Vortice'..The Jimmy Lewis 'Distance'..and the new Naish 'Glide'.

Please let us know how you go and also what I need to do to get my wife to want to buy me a new board..

DJ

Thanks DJ, SUP Aust and SF for your feedback. No my husband doesn't know I planning on buying it for him and yes it may be a good idea to run it by him. I'm pretty sure he would race it and would expect he may attempt Molokai next year. I heard through a mate at Noosa that there is a wait for the Penetrator and we have both tried one out. I found it hard to manouver and now have a new appreciation for the guys who race these is big seas.

Another friend on the Gold Coast mentioned the Dale Chapman to me yesterday and said how all the Gold Coast boys prefer it. So I'm confused and David you are probably correct. He should test afew out before making a choice.

David..the way to get your wife to buy one is the "lure and idea that she will use it too"..but that's a secret also. Thanks for your comments guys.

Sue , It's Rob Pirie here Danny will need and want a 16 footer , 2 of Dale Chapmans boards have already done Molakai race , this will be a good starting point.Anything shorter than 16 feet will be not be competeitive. If Danny is not going to race any of the previously mentioned boards will be fine.

Dale has a few of these boards available and they do weekly training sessions on them.

Give him a call.0416160335

Thanks Rob. I have ended up telling Danos about the board so he can test a few out to ensure he makes the right decision. I would say he will end up racing and would presume he may want to paddle Molokai next year. I have emailed Todd Bradley for his opinion on Danny on the Vortice as he knows his size/abilities. And I will get him to call Dale soon. Thanks for the number and your reply. Have you checked out my ning web site yet. I will email you the addess in a private message. Thanks Sue
