In a desperate attempt to find some surf in Perth without 1 million other guys out. I came across this spot on google earth.

The only thing is there seems to be large Johnies hanging around there.

Do any of the Perth guys ever paddle out to the outer reefs around Hillarys for a surf?

What is your take on the chance of being hit by a Grey Suit on a Sup?

Im not a paddler (yet) but i suggest that would make a ideal trip. Not sure what the laws are in relation to safety gear that far out.

But sadly to say reef break's like that will still get up to 20 blokes sometimes..

The Alkimos would be another but i have surfed there with 35 other guys in the water..

I used to sup surf little island all the time probobly 3 or more times a week.. Paddle out from the dog beach.. Decent paddle but not to bad.. It's a good wave but as has already been said there will be at nearly 20 out on a good day midweek and can be much much more on weekends..

Problem with this wave also is sups and longboards can sit really deep and far out meaning on sets you will have to dodge the whole pack on the way threw and most likely will get burnt by some clown..

I stopped surfing little island because I was nearly in a fight every time I went out, funny enough I never had any problem with the decent surfers always the crabs that have no idea..

Not sure of your skill level but if you are heading out there do the right thing sharing is caring and sups really don't need any more bad names..

Hope this helps..... Belly

once saw a chunky whitey chasing a seal at the island,, through the wave, whilst windsurfing with greenroom and leach.

also seen hammerheads and others.

heard stories of tigers aswell..

i'd rather be on a windsurfer/sup than dangling around on a shortboard

This is the worst one for different types of bities, you dont just get sharks but also get norwest blowies and they are really agressive. A couple of mates were in the water after I got one day, Im sitting in the boat and they start waving their arms about shouting and then paddleing back like madmen. Two big nw blowies were attacking them and one bit my mate on the calf, they have got big teeth.
I havnt surfed out there for years, great wave tho when its on....

No ways are you talking about blow fish? Never knew they would attack. Also unbelievable to think that regardless of sharks and bitting blowfish there is still loads of guys out there on sorties.

If you want a place that is not overcrowded, cross the island off your list immediately. It's an OK wave but it has a small takeoff zone which feels crowded with five people out let alone the 40 odd that will go out there when it's on.

Alkimos can be fun in a small swell but is going the way of the island in terms of crowds.

I'd say forget SUP surfing in Perth. Buy a Downwind board and a carving board and a big stick and get your fix!

I starting SUP 3 years ago and there would be only a handful at leighton or Dutchies. Now there are Mals, SUPs and of course short boarders everywhere. Not a new problem, but one that will get worse.

We have great waves here, but far too few. The short boarders deserve them.

Ahh to have east coast waves with rolling sets and inside/outside options
