Might depend on where you are going.
Just returned from 7 weeks in the UK where we took our own Iphones which were "unlocked".
Bought sim cards from "3" for 15 pounds each, then bought 50 pounds of credit.
300 minute of calls, can't remember the number of SMS, and unlimited data.
I still have credit, but I can't read the f****n thing, and don't carry my glasses around.

Bought "Orange" in France which did not have the same benefit, but cant remember the details.

What about Skype or Vontage internet phone. Cheap, but with a few limitations (need wifi).
We have skype we use at home since our 3g signal is so bad, it works great.

Make sure you turn off data roaming. That's the killer.

Yeah plenty of options in the states for cheap prepaid phone or SIM card - if you've got an old unlocked phone you'll save a few bucks taking and buying a just SIM card over buying a cheap phone.
Probably good to be aware that most of the prepaid plans in the states are blocked from making international calls... Im not saying that you'd want to be using it to call home regularly paying ridiculous $ for international mobile calls - but if you did need to call back for an emergency you won't be able to use it.

Another option is a TravelSim which works in every country and allows you to call anywhere - I've heard their call rates are pretty reasonable, but I think its a pay as you go system, so no extended call caps like most us phones will give you.

If you've go an iPhone or similar here, its always useful to take it with you even if you're planning to get a local phone and don't intend to use your Aussie phone for calls while you'reover there...
- you can keep all your booking details (flights, hire car, hotels etc.) in on place
- there's free wifi almost every in the states so you'll be able to lookup and book stuff online if needed, make calls or send messages back here for free using viber or Skype, and even keep up to date with everything on Seabreeze or keep us up to date with your BOP results
- you'll have access to international phone calls via international roaming just in case you need to (I think some phone companies might require you to activate international roaming before leaving here but it shouldn't cost you anything to turn it on).

Just a few tips if you do take your Aussie phone:

Make sure data roaming is switched off before you leave Australia (or it will cost a fortune just on incidental data usage your phone uses as soon as its switched on).

"International roaming" can be switched on to send & receive text or calls (remember this is different to "data roaming").

Turn wifi on so you can pick up local free wifi whenever you need to.

Don't expect to be able to use the GPS navigation on you phone to help you get places - as much as most smart phones have built in GPS capability, the navigation software usually uses data, so it won't work (unless you want to pay as much on you phone bill as you spent on flights and decide to turn data roaming on).

Receiving texts on your Aussie phone is usually free and it wont cost any extra for people sending them to you either.

Sending texts from your Aussie phone isn't too expensive when travelling (50c-$1) but often not included in a cap so it will make you monthly phone bill higher.

You will be charged to receive calls as well as to make them, so...

I always try to remember to turn all voicemail services off before leaving the country - you don't want people leaving a message expecting you to call back, or to be continually getting texts from your voice mailbox telling you that you have a new voice message or that your mailbox is full (as you probably wont want to spend $ calling up to empty it).

Consider leaving a greeting saying you are away and won't be answering or returning any calls until your back (if its important they'll send you a text or email instead).

If your someone whose use to grabbing your phone and answering it soon as it makes a noise without thinking about it (can't say I've ever had that problem but I'm sure there's some phoneaholics that do), then I'd suggest leaving it on silent whole you're away - if you don't notice it's ringing you won't think about answering it, so it won't cost you a cent.

If you're really really worried about getting charged for others ringing you, I think you might be able to request you phone company blocks incoming calls while you're away (but I'm not completely sure about this) - or just leave the phone here and do without the benefits of having it while your away.

... And check with you phone company re. Charges for everything I've listed above because I'm sure they all have some differences too.

On another note (nothing to do with phones) if you're planning to hire a car and do a lot of driving while your there, a GPS can be really useful if you don't know where your going.... but have a think about how many days you'll be paying the $10-15USD surcharge to hire it with the car and you might find its cheaper to buy one here (if you don't already have one) and then buy the US maps online (about $100) and save them on your GPS before you go. That way you won't need to pay again and again to hire the GPS if you go back next year or the following.

PS have a great trip Andrew, you'll love the BOP!

ABSOLUTELY!!! Sage advise indeed PT, when a marketing company from India rings your Ozzie number, gets tranferred to you OS rings you in France and it costs you $60.00!!!! I thought it was hilarious until I got the bill when we got home, we even had a wrong number cost us $25.00 Arrrgh!!!! An "$800.00 phone bill learned me and wiped the smile off my face. It ended up the Phone provider paid half because they should tell you about the charges when they activate the service. Buying Sims in the Country your'e visiting is good and in some asian countrys such as South Korea is the only option you hire them at the airporA. Talk to your service provider they will usually give you good advice, or do Skype on your mobile. It depends on the country you visit. Even ring the RACQ on a motoring pretext and they give out advice, strange but usually true, get an international driving license at the same time they used to cost around $30.00 Have fun

When in the US teatrea go to any AT&T store there's one in San Clemente on Del Mar 10 minute drive south of BOP Dana Point (theres a greet restaurant in Dana Point Harbour it's a must, fisherman's bar) you can buy a cheap phone then pay $50 you'll get unlimited phone calls unlimited SMS & unlimited SMS world wide now thats great value.
I find Alamo the best value for a hire car, Downwinder got a JEEP styling. Tune the car radio into 101.1 great value for music then maybe 104.3
Teatrea on the BOP lay days go to MAGIC MOUNTAIN it's a rush leave early don't get stuck in peak hour traffic get in the car pool lane and cruise at 80mph or 140 kph and UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, DISNEYLAND.
Take a walk down Venice Beach for a laugh the freaks will blow ya mind too funny. And do a HOLLYWOOD stars tour it's worth the money it's an all day cruise.
Remember America IS NOT cheap anymore it has Australian prices plus sales tax and tip. sales tax is at 8% to 12% depending what county you're in WTF. I remember when it was just 6 cents to the dollar USA wide for sales tax you'd go to America with an empty suite case and bring it back full of cloths and sporting goods, not anymore.
The best value for money is all the boose. Beer, Wine & Spirits. 12 pack of Corona's $12 stoked I drank a ctn a day, mate I became an alco.
Have Fun teatrea
But it's great to be home DW

Try Viber. An app that works on Android. Like Skype but better and free or nearly free. Has worked well to communicate with my son while he is OS. Only downside is that you need to be near a WIFI hot spot. But this has not been much of a problem while he was touring Europe and NZ.

I'm about to do another trip to India. I take my unlocked iphone 3gs and just buy a local sim. Dirt cheap and lots of internet access.

The older iphone is the go for 3rd world countries because it uses a mini-sim. They don't have micro-sims in most places.

I always enable every kind of roaming so I can make calls during stop overs on the way. It's invaluable in an emergency to be able to contact people and do stuff.

I've never found good enough free internet access for skype calls anywhere, including in Australia.

Try installing Viber instead of skype for free calls over wifi. Better quality, easier to use and free to call other Viber users. I've used it in the US, Morrocco, Spain and Italy.

be careful when you land in SanFran teatrea because you love smoking cigarettes I believe, if you do run out of cigarettes don’t ask anybody for a spare fag otherwise you’ll have 20 blokes hanging off you.

In New York recently I had data and international roaming off but could still use the maps apps accurately to find my way around.

As for wifi, in NYC at least, all the department stores (and Starbucks etc etc) have free wifi and I had no trouble calling my daughter (in Costa Rica) on Skype - so my wife could choose the right brand of makeup to take down to her, lol.

Didn't use the 'phone for calls at all (only away for 10 days), but it still was very useful for internet access, maps, subway app etc. Also, the iPhone to iPhone free texts were good for msging back home. Just needed to add wifi which, as I said above, is easy in the cities in the US.

+1 It needs to be fast for Skype. Even check with hotels on there speeds. Interet cafe's and Kiosks are usually pretty good. BTW in India be careful if they ask you for your passport details. Identity theft is very popular over there. Ask at your hotel for the safest!! Even be careful in the States. Have a ball Mr.Trea
