Hi Guys,
Digging here for some info to help me understand fins, and what they do.

Can someone tell me what the side bites do? And what a bigger/smaller centre fin does? And what if you move it fwd or back? Just so I have a clue. Before I start undoing the screws on them!

Also whats the advantage of a Quad (five fins?) al la McTavish SUP ?

Thanks

I am new to SUP, but in surfing - in general, you should never be scared to undo the screws change your fin set up - It is the quickest way to learn about them, and what they do!

-Sliding your centre fin forward will make the board looser, but of course it will not track as well.
-Side biters will make your board more responsive (give more bite), than if you rode it with only the single fin.

Changing out your fins for diferent size / shapes / configurations can make your board feel like a whole different board. Give it a go!

You could spend hours reading about fin design and function if you do a search with Google!

Thankyou Craigus - you have just increased my knowledge of fins from nothing to something!

Is it just me or is 'side bites' an American term for 'side fins'.. That's what we call them here in Oz..

"Side bites" (I think) is the term more reserved for small side fins.
Side Bites = Small Side Fins (??)

I've never tried a 5 fin set-up. In general, 5 fins position options is more orientated towards alternating between Thruster, Quad (4 fins), or even Twinnie option.

As Craigus said, don't be scared to experiment.

Also, don't be scared in trying full sized fins on the side.

Go nuts, and add 2 more side fin position options.... even try collecting all of your available fins, and make a 7 finner !! Probably too much drag, but there's nothing stopping anyone trying !

I've found the Thruster Set-Up gives me more forward down the line drive than the quad, but the quad is more maneuverable. Quad set-up still drives down the line quite well.

Also try 4 full sized fins in Quad mode. Or even the bigger MR (Mark Richards) side fins, with normal size fins behind that. Probably not MR's as the trailing pair.... Also try the small side fins / side biters as the rear fins.

Experiment !!
