Apologies to post about a topic which has previously been discussed however, I need some help with my paddle selection. Due to a niggling injury, I recently sold a couple of surf paddles both of which had large blades & stiff shafts.

I generally like my surf paddles fractionally below head height so do you recommend using a tapered shaft (oval or round?) for surfing & if so, are they as robust as conventional shafts? From what I've read about QB paddles, round tapered are the stiffest (39 SSI) followed by oval tapered (38 SSI) & then your elite flyweight offer the most flex (36 SSI)?

Asked another way, is it more common to use a tapered shafts for DW'ing only or is it purely personal preference & if so, is the stregnth across all 3 shaft options comparable? Thanks

personal preference for the 2 first but beware of the elite flyweight , it has been made for junior and women. They don't advise them for heavier people
My wife has one , loves it. I paddled around sometime with it, but I wouldn't use it myself. It does not hold the same strength
The tapered oval is a bit more flexy. So you can consider that if you have some shoulder issues. But the difference will come a lot from the blade as well.
Trifecta has definitely more flex than the V drive. This is why I feel more comfortable with it as otherwise I get shoulder issues reappearing...
Hope that helps

Thanks Al Hunter - that's exactly the info I needed cause I didn't see any mention of that on the QB website. Looks like Trifecta with the oval tapered would be the sensible option. Cheers

you can special order what ever you want. i have a reconstructed shoulder and go with a slightly softer plane round shaft for my paddles. i definitely wouldn't go v drive my shoulder just couldn't take it. The trifecta is really nice, i have the 96 and it feels big compared to my 90majic for flat water I'm just thinking of getting another 96 but with a 38 round shaft that came on my old slimjim in the near future. Just drop them a email they are super helpful if you say you what you looking for.

Thanks charlieuk - that's good to know. I currently have a slimjim (SSI38) which feels a whole lot easier on my shoulders/back vs my previous paddles but I've heard good things about both the Trifecta & V Drive so I thought I should give them a go. Possibly I need to reconsider the V Drive option. Cheers

yea i don't know what injury you have but the v drive is pretty brutal on me and my shoulder said no way! the trifecta feels a bit like a slim jim but a bit more power for its size the 96 is easily as powerful as the 100 slim jim the round 38 shaft feels good to me for the surf.

Old shoulder dislocation which was reconstructed years back but unfortunately never rehabed properly & it's come back to haunt me. My SJ 92 feels good but I miss that instant power paddling onto a wave which I had with my previous 2 x surf paddles...finding that happy medium is tricky. By all accounts the Trifecta 96 should give me that extra little bit of ooomph so I guess I just need to decide between a redular SSI 38 & the oval tapered which is also SSI 38. Cheers

I have a V-Drive 91", Trifecta 86" & 96" all on flyweight shafts.
I cut my paddles very, very short by normal standards so don't be confused by that.
It's as the other guys have said; the V-Drive has a big catch.
The Trifecta have lighter catches but really load up mid-stroke.
I choose my V-Drive for shorter distance DW on my Ace(up to 20km),
I use the 96" Trifecta for Flatwater and I use the 86" Trifecta for long distance DW(20km +) on my 17'4" Bullet.
A mate of mine has bad shoulders and he loves his Trifectas(he has an 86" & 96")with oval tapered shafts.

Sorry I did not mention it before but I would advise trifecta 86 of course.
Even travis uses the 86 so it's not like you can't get enough power out of it....
