So I want to upgrade my fins on my quad 9'6 where do I start?

I want the drive I have today from my quad M7's, but I want the board to be looser and turn a bit tighter, don't feel like buying a heap of FCS fins and I don't have the opportunity to try either.

smaller fins in the back or getting a complete new set of fins, s-24 large/medium or.. any ideas where to start?

Not sure on SUP but on my short boards I have been riding quads for 4 yrs now and find smaller fins on the back are the way to go for sure. I normally put bigger fins in only when the waves are bigger or super hollow.

Question:

With the 4 x M7's do you have sides or centers in the rear plugs?

Try the one you don't have and see how that feels.

OR add up the mm2 area of 4 x M7's and then change how that is on your board. ie a little bigger front and a little smaller rear than a M7. Perhaps a twin in the front and a M3 in the back. You will keep the drive but perhaps make it a little looser from the tail.

Smurfing,
Are you running 4 x M7's, or running GXQ in the rear, M7 front?

If M7 + GXQ, then the total fin area of Simon Quads Large or Medium will still be greater....

Try Simon Quads to suit your size. If you don't like them after a few months, you will get about 65% of your money back on eBay.

Yep, the trick is to use fins designed for your weight to use on a 14" shortboard tail on your SUP with a 19"+ and fins way further apart and then go surf as flat as you can and paddle across every wave to try and get some speed.

You'll know if they're small enough as the board will be super loose have no drive whatsoever and you'll be able to wiggle as much as you like. It looks so good......

I got M7's both front and rear, the total fin area 10137 mm² x 4 fins = 40548mm2
and Simon's Large with smaller back twin is: 9756mm2 x 2 x 9172mm2 = 37856mm2
Might be a good size for a 80kg's surfer, the base is almost the same so the drive would be what I look for, a bit more sweep on s-25 and depth would be less with smaller back fins, so that should get me a bit looser tighter turns I hope but what are the alternatives?

From my experience as a finaholic.... with quads on short SUPs you should try to have a bigger set on the front for the drive, and then a smaller set on the rear to help with the pivot or sharper turns.

Important to use a flat foil (on the inside front set ) and usually most quad rear sets are double foiled.

On my 8'6 Magic Carpet quad i am currently using Pancho Sullivan fronts and future controller rears (similar to the PSH quad set) and the board is performing unreal.

In your case (FCS) maybe the Shaper S9's in the front and a smaller rear set of quad e 's in the rear.Another good option is the SA4's for allround performance as a quad.

Also take into consideration what tail shape and board you are riding as certain fins can do certain things to boards.

Fins are a real personal thing and you should beg, borrow and try as many as setups as you can.

I don't think any pre-package quad sets come with matching front and rear fin sizes. The rear is always slightly smaller.

I've become a fin fanatic and own piles of FCS.

What quad placement does your board use? Mckee, or edge finned?

Rusty and Channel Island use Mckee. I found their fins, R2 Rusty and K2.1 quads, work well with Mckee. The K2.1s are my favorite.

I never got along with FCS 7s.
