Hi all,

I just thought I'd post my comment on the LAIRD SUP. I hope you all post your comments on the SUP boards you have ridden.

The Laird is quite a beast. At 12'1" long and 31" wide, it is very stable. Very suitable for bigger riders, or as a stable platform for kids to mess around on. Paddling speed is very good, and the board kick turn very well, and is stable. A good board for learning skills like turns and paddling techniques. I found the board surfed quite well, but was a bit on the big side for performance turns, however, it did do stall turns very well and maintained speed on very small waves. Great glide.

All up, a good first time board for the bigger rider. Very stable, fast paddling. Excellent choice for flat water of small waves or riders who are after stability over high performance wave riding.

Regards,

JB

HI Steve,

Everything below I got from the Hot Sails Maui website. Nice longboarding section there that seems to focus on the Stand Up stuff in particular. www.hotsailsmaui.com/2007/ is the link then click on longboards.

The first quote is from Jeff Henderson who is pretty up on the whole stand up thing.

The second quote is from a guy called Rand who has clearly paddled a truck load of boards and seeing he is riding down to 9'6" on a custom Jimmy Lewis I'd guess he knows a thing or two.

In Rand's comments he rates the Ku Nalu which is the same shape as the Starboard 12'2"

Take a look at the site some time as it's a good one.

All the best and let me know if you have any questions.

Sam.

"I have come up with a little rating system that may be helpful to newbees to the sport who are shopping. Please add boards, or suggest better way to do this. Just for fun. Results are what I think from my experience, looking at the boards and listening to those who have used them.

Ratings are 1-100 with 100 being perfect.

Brand, Model, p=Paddle rating, S= flat water sailing rating, W=wave sailing/surfing rating

Star 12"2 = P80, S/40, W/90
Star 12"6 = P100, S/70, W/60
SOS 11'11" = P100, S/40, W/90
SOS 10'10" = P80, S/30, W/95
Exo Kona = P50, S/100, W/10
Mistral Pacfico =P80, S/80, W/40
Tabou = P40, S/90, W/20
Jimmy L.....
Etc
Etc."

"I would suggest a couple of tweaks. Let's add a category for SUP flat water paddling and seperate out SUP Surfing. Additionally, it may be more hepful if the poster lists his/her height and weight, so the suggestions can help people of a similar size make a good choice.

185-190 lbs/6'2

SOS 11'11 = FWP 85, SP 80, FS na, WS na (great paddler for flat water, great LB style surfer)
SOS 10'10 = FWP 85, SP 55, FS na, WS na (great paddler for flat water, stiff and locked in surf)
KuNalu 12+ = FWP 95, SP 75, FS na, WS na (unreal paddler for flat water, good LB style surfer)
Laird 12+ = FWP 70, SP 30, FS na, WS na (very stable but slow for flat water, poor surfer)
Timpone 11'6 = FWP 85, SP 85, FS na, WS na (a friend's custom, best LB I have used)
JL 11'7= FWP 50, SP 85, FS na, WS na (round bottom = tippy, great LB style surfer)
JL 11= FWP 80, SP 80, FS na, WS na (stable and fun-best first board to own)
JL 9'10 x 28+ x 4 = FWP na, SP 92, FS na, WS na (good stability paddling, excellent surfer)
JL 9'6 x 26.5+ x 4 = FWP na, SP 97, FS na, WS na (tricky paddling, unreal surfer)"
