awoke to another groundhog day of flat ocean, that blip of swell last week seems but a dream.

so went for a paddle. nothing out of the ordinary, just the daily flat no waves no wind usual; a couple lengths of the beach; around the island, up the channel; under the bridge, around the caravan park channel marker then home.

heaps of people out celebrating bogan pride day.

tide was rushing out the channel, so i just plodded away; stuck to the edge, took my time, conscious of maintianing an efficient paddle cadence and technique.

flew back out along the channel with the tide.

just rounded the island on my home stretch; got past the north end flags, when this kid yells "that looks awesome, can you catch waves"

'yes' i said, 'indeed i can, when there is waves to catch'

no sooner had i said that, when this lump of two foot swell began to take shape not more than a few digs of my blade away from me....

.... i'll show this young snapper how i can catch waves, was the first thought that came to my mind.

.... i wonder if he has a nubile buxom young chaperone of whom i can impress upon, was the immediate second thought that passed as i stroked he-man like into the gently forming swell.

.... this wave ain't gonna know what hit it, was my last thought before i heard an almighty SNAP, and went head first over the front of my board and into the drink.

it sounded like a sizable tree branch snapping, and the shaft gave way right where my hand was. it actually cut me pretty bad.

whats the warranty like on these things...?
its less than twelve months old, has been treated with kid gloves its entire life, has only ever been used by me, never had any knocks, have never fallen on it.

i mean, i was going for a dig when it snapped, but nothing more than i have done in the past.

Was there any warning? My methane is about six months old. When I put allot of weight into a paddle stoke I can hear a strange noise, sought of like a creaking / cracking sound. Have inspected it and cannot find any hairline cracks or marks. Don’t know if it’s something that is common or a precursor of something failing

My main sport involves a lot of carbon (cycling - track).
When you head creaking or cracking noises, that usually means something (carbon failure or bond failure) is on its way out....ignore the noise at your own peril - they failures usually are of the catatrophic type!

You *may* find a crack under load if you're lucky. If you do, you can usually tell the difference between a crack and a scratch in the clearcoat by seeing if it soaks up thin oil. The only other way is to get a xray (expensive).

Good luck.

nope no warning whatso ever.

i have a supsurf paddle with a fiberglass shaft and that flexes when i paddle it.

have tried the new starboard paddles and they flex when paddled.

the methane was always stiff compared to these two.

will call W.S.S tommorrow and see what the dealio is.

still picking shards and fibres outta the palm of my hand

^^^ how awesome is that....!!!

snapped one day, replaced the next..

I bought the methane originally on its reputation as a performing surf paddle.

i used it everyday, well if not everyday, just about everyday.

i've tried many paddles but always prefered the feel of the oval shaft and the t-piece handle.

when it snapped i was devastated, but willing to take it on the chin, get it repaired and maybe try something else for a change.

with that kind of service, i'm a kialoa paddler for life..

thanks Sam and Windsurfsnow

That's one reason why I love Kialoa so much..

I've only ever heard of one breaking (other than on forums) and I've never broken one myself.. and I give mine heaps.
