All of this talk of GPS's on Iphones, Board tests, sailboarding sites and the way the Cross Fit thing works has got me thinking. The GPS thread mentioned this also and I think it's a great idea.

Here's a simple one for us if anyone is interested.

We set up a Facebook page called SUP World Challenge or something.

Whenever you get a chance, before or after work, on the weekend or whenever you go and do a 250 or 400m flatwater sprint. You GPS track it, upload the results to the facebook page and the fastest paddler per class, Surf SUP, 12'6, 14' and unlimited becomes the fastest in the world........ A computer nerd would know how to rank them, you may be the 200th quickest in the world, you might be 1st!!

It could be promo'd globally on the Forums and Facebook. It's an easy accessible distance for people to do pretty much no matter where they live and disregarding tides and winds etc fairly consistent. Besides if someone set the worlds quickest time downwind with a king tide the conditions could be checked pretty easy and called bull crap upon.

What do you guys think? Would people be interested.

Sounds fun but too open to cheating or variations in conditions.

For example you could upload a GPS track of a paddle down a fast flowing river or tail wind - its going to be much quicker

or attach the GPS to your boat??

It's not racing for sheep stations.... Also as I mentioned above it's pretty easy to check conditions these days on the net of anywhere.

Your GPS record has date and time.....

It's really only for people to check their progress, board speeds etc.

Sounds like a great idea CMC.
Like you stated we are not going to award prizes or trophies, it will be a place to check in to see how you compare with the rest of your suburb, state, nation or the world. It will make training more entertaining and also make you get in the water when conditions aren't ideal but you know you should train.
You might be able to design an app for it and make some money too. It can cover cycling, running, kiteing, kayaks, ski's and more.
Maybe you should have kept it to yourself until you had a pattern on it.

I say go for it.

that works for me. The sailors use a rule on the GPS challenge they have and that is there must be two people present to prove the pace you recorded.

I was thinking it could be a great promo.

"The CMC SUP Internet Olympics" Hahahah.

I like the idea of short distances as the variables matter less, it's easier to confirm and easy for anyone to enter no matter what equipment or fitness level.

Send a message to Hardie from the widsurfing forum, I believe he set up the windsurf GPS challenge site. Which by all accounts is pretty good.

It gives info on the leading speedsters for each month, and you can create teams and have people allocated to teams (Currumbin, Port Phillip etc) and get a bit of a team race thing going as well.

There may be the ability to create a SUP class on that site and all the hard work is already done... I don't know, just thinking out loud... or via type as the case may be.

I checked that site, looks great.

One thing he did say on that site was that due to overwhelming response from people on the forum they set it up. I'm happy for whoever to do it but unless people want it it seems a bit in vein.

What were you paddling Teatree?

It would be good to know what people are paddling, but things like tide and wind make a huge difference. Maybe add it those to keep people honest e.g tail wind going with the tide.

I reckon that if we have divisions i.e. short board, 12'6, 14 and unlimited then it helps to keep track of peoples progress.

I like the idea, I posted about using Runkeeper as that's what I use on my IPhone when I go for a paddle. Gives me all the things I need to track my performance, GPS map, speed, distance, sprint speeds, calories burned etc .
If using Runkeeper you don't need to start a whole new blog or site just add willing SUPers to your "street team" this way you can keep in touch with other like minded paddlers and compare stats etc That way seabreeze won't be flooded with the posts also.

For you guys have far too much time on your hands.
Check this game out, on ocpaddler, you'll get the idea, and there is no way of cheating. Post your distance to see who has the best theoretical technique.
First go I got a distance of 418.615

The reason I thought Facebook may be easy as all of the apps have a post to Facebook button. You finish the run, hit post to Facebook, share it with the page and you're done. This could be done on the bank after the paddle from your iPhone.

Hi CMC,
Yeah your right a dedicated FB page called SeaSpeed could be a goer, so we can just post up distances, maps, speeds etc
A bit of healthy competition and encouragement for all us that can't get to any races or any group SUPing as I an the only person within 1000 km that even has a SUP!
