Chris at Stand Up Paddle Boards in Noosa has a great tape and has been experimenting for a while. It is like a clear plastic that is about 2mm thick and 50mm wide. It looks good and handles the knocks.

Sorry, novice question here. Would putting rail tape on a distance or downwind board noticeably affect the performance/speed?

Just wonderin'...

I reckon it can add drag especially if placed too low. None is better but it does stop the dings.

I have a roll of 3M tape 50mm x 5m if you want to purchase it, I got it wholesale at $50 (BTW it's not cheap stuff ). That's what you can have it for if you like.

I would not worry about rail tape and just put two layers of electrical tape on the edge of the paddle blade... Just my 2 cents..

Alternatively or as extra protection, you can also get paddle edge guards from Roar Industries at West Burliegh.

Hey Guys,

We just use the clear step grip tape that you buy from bunnings. You can get it in various lengths and widths and it works really well. Costs between $20 -35 for 5m.

I was showing it to Paul from SHQ yesterday when he was looking at my Laird.

I havnt seen any noticable reduction in speed or performance since I have added it.

I have tried the glue on paddle edge protector, but imho it makes the paddle stroke seem realy weird???? and it only lasted on my paddle for about 4 weeks and then fell off

Forget the tape just put a paddlegard on your paddle and you'll never have to worry again. We sell them for under $40 great investment if you want to look after your board.
We found with the tape if you eva have to remove it, it pulls the paint of your board which defeats the purpose of putting it on.

I agree tape on your paddle is better. Had tape on the rails of my 1st board....all it did was hide the dings and when I pulled it finally it took the clearcoat with it at every small ding. Made a bigger mess than if it hadn't been there at all.

I use the 3M mastic tape with another layer of regular electricians tape. Don't hit the rails much anymore so its been on for months. I'm going to try Bill's hockey tape with wax solution over the mastic once this needs replacing. He's had this on his paddle for a LONG time now and he's on the water almost every day.

I certainly would not be putting tape on the rails of a surf board, the rails are the cutting edge of design I t would cause a lot of drag and sluggy feel through turns. Just dont hit the rails with your paddle, I hardly ever hit the rails with my paddle anymore.
