A narrower hull with a single AMA would be much faster. I wonder if anyone will ever have a serious dig at making one? Maybe not if the rules state single hull, maybe unlimited should be just that.
You'd think Mark Raaphorst would be all over this, what with his standamaran and all. The ama kind of makes more sense than a dual hull.
Yeah I think it does also. From paddling a bit on OC1 you learn that the minute you lift the Ama out of the water it reacts like a ski or single hulled craft. OC1's are actually narrower than a surf ski and this helps their speed. Paddling with a sinlgle blade slows it back down though. An OC1 needs the Ama to stay upright with its paddling style, however you constantly lift or at least unweight the Ama to reduce drag. The Amas distance from the main hull also creates stability.
An Ama on a narrow stand up hull, maybe even in the low 20's with more rounded or veed bottoms would lift speed amazingly. Just as you do on a OC1 you can lift the ama to run on the single hull when on bumps etc. I am no expert but maybe that would make it faster than a standamaran even.
The racing yacht cats run on a single hull quite a lot.
My reference to the unlimited racing class is that making restrictions to what can be raced in this class is limiting it. It's not unlimited with restrictions.
