Hi all ,

First post and new to SUP based in Melbourne.

I have a Naish 11'6 AST which i's getting the hang of . I weigh 125kgs and 6'4 tall so the balance thing is a bit of tricky one .

Looking forward to meeting some of you down the bay or beaches . I mainly head down to Anglesea or Williamstown .

Anyway for training I was thinking of doing some morning paddles from Fairfield boathouse or one of the rowing club jettys .
Noticed the Quickblade guy paddling a river specific type board and thought about making something like that .
Have picked up an old open class sailboard a Jim French Dart , a full on hollow foam sandwich 15ft board only 25 inch wide about 20 cm thick but rounded like a K1 kayak . No chance of standing upright on it even lying on it is difficult without the centreboard down .
This is my thought what about some type of out rigger Now heres where you all come in . I need some guidance and wisdom from those who would like to see try this thing when its done . I think it will fly .
Initially I am not sure to make it intoa polynesian style out rigger off to one side or trimaran style with two smaller pontoons each side .
Any thoughts ?

Look forward to the replies

All the best Dartboy.

Gday Dartboy and welcome to the Breeze.

My 2c; Cut it in half lengthwise then put some spreaders in so you have a standamaran

Hi and welcome.

I'd be happy to meet you at Studley park boathouse and we could paddle up to Fairfield boathouse and back... I've done it many times and it's a good workout.

Also Re the Jim French board.. At 15' and 25" wide you should be ok on flat water.. You may need some speed before you get stability.

I'd be keen to try it... I also have a light hollow windsurfer (Cobra) that I'm looking forward to trying one day.

Hi Guys ,

First thanks for the response and thoughts .

Standamaran was an option to build at one stage . I want to keep the board in one piece so I can still sail it when I get the urge . This thing will fly in 3 knts.

The deck is 25 but the hull is about 18 , veeeeery tippy ! It is basically a log .

Anyway the Studley to Fairfield boathouse paddle looks like a good effort ,do you think a unfit 42 year old could make it that far and back ?

Again thanks ,

Darty.

mmm, then I would be inclined to go an out rigger a la OC1. The spreaders will need to be pretty long so you dont hit the outrigger which will have to be quite long itself so that paddling inside the spreaders doesnt cause you to shorten your stroke. All this is going to add a bit of weight depending on what you want to fabricate it out of. Making it a tri would then be an extra 100% weight increase. Not worth it for the 3rd hull IMHO.

Have a look at the OC1 forums. I reckon they would have lots of tips about how to source outriggers for spares, repairs etc.

I haven't seen a Jim French Dart in over twenty years. They were made in Sydney and were the Aussie answer to Pan Ams for light wind sailboard racing. Scotty O'Conner (Namotu) used to race one, I'm pretty sure he even took it to Hawaii for one season.

I would think that it might be a collectable, so try not to alter it.
