Can anyone comment on whether soft roof racks damage your car's paint?

Will regular racks damage the board (in a board bag)?

Yes & Yes , soft racks are not good for Sups.

Hard racks with a raised D shaped rubber like the Rola rack will put a depression across your board if you over tighten your straps , so it's a good to put it in a board bag before you strap the board down , however it is OK for the rack to have direct contact with the board if your deck grip is resting on it.

I use the the Rhino racks big tough and ugly with a padded flat top. Make sure you always use straps to tie your board down , rope and Occy straps can also damage your board , plus the Occy's often snap under load.

My mate has 2 neat creases in his carbon 12'6 as a result of 1) loading the board bottom side down on Rola racks and 2) cranking down too hard on his straps.

I use softracks to hold a 12'6 raceboard onto a flat roofed van. No probs so far, way less pressure on the board too

Geez you would be filthy at yourself doing that. Just buy some foam or pool noodles and cut them up to place them on the rack when you are carrying your SUP.

Remember a mate who had one of those all in one old metal square roof racks. The whole thing flew off his roof one day stacked with four boards. Fortunately didnt kill anyone but the boards got mashed.

Mine are 1&1/2" aluminium bars, a visit to 'clark rubber' and bought a pair of foam tubing, sold for the above-mentioned purpose - to protect items from damage when on roof-racks. I used to use insulation foam tubing, but it's too soft & had to cable-tie it down. the tubing I got this time has a small slit in it & self-clamps onto the rail, not needing anything to hold it there & easily peels off when not wanted. I leave it on most days, and take it off for long trips when I'm not using the racks.

The following pic isn't what I got, but gives the idea...

Might be worth gently heating along the crease with a hair dryer or heat gun at a low temp, with luck the creases may pop out! Be gentle!
