I got down to Sandy today and it was cold, windy and overcast with a sou'west lumpy bumpy swell form a night of 20 knot south westerlies.. Bugger!

At 7am the tents were already up and now it was time to help bring all the demo boards down and help with the flags and banners.

Woogie was working hard setting up a Coreban display.

Paul, Alan and Tim were getting ready for the big race.

The beach was soon covered in boards.

Mike from SHQ welcomed everyone and explained the race rules.

I then had to run for my board (17' Glide) and join everyone on the water for the water start to the race.. Just waiting for the starters gun was hard work with the confused wind swell that was coming in from the west in an almost onshore direction.. Jamie and Jacko were further out on the starting line with Dave, Cam and Lumers more to the inside.. I was near the middle.. Bang! and we're off.

To my right Jamie (on his 14' JM custom board) and Jacko (on the 14' Javelin) soon left the other paddlers near them behind and Dave (on his big F18) was taking and way inshore line to my left with Cam and Lumers having a race together on their big Naish 17's.

As the leaders turned at the turning point to head back I could see Jamie with Jacko close behind him.. Dave not far behind them.. and Cam managing to stay just ahead of Lumers... and that's pretty much how it ended.

I had misplaced my camera and didn't get any more pics of the race and presentation but I'm sure Paul did.. I did find my camera and got some great pictures of everyone paddle within the Sandy Marina after the paddling clinics and kids races.

I'll post my other pictures soon... What a great day.. Thanks to every one that made it happen..

After a few snags from the BBQ (thanks Mike) and a paddling clinic from Woogie and Lumers we headed over to the Sandy Maria for some cruising around and a chance to get some tips from the legends of SUP.. IMO this was the best part of the day.

Check out that back on Jamie.. (it's not gay to say that is it?)

Check out the bend in that shaft.. and it's not GoPro distortion.

The view from the peanut gallery.

Jamie on a Coreban.. Quick someone take a pic.

Jamie about to rip a hole on the water.

I reckon Jamie could be our 'Aussie Laird'.. .. Heaps more pics to come..

When they draft they like to get real close don't they..

The best part about that pic is Jamie holding up my Kialoa paddle..

Maybe it will now have special powers..

Oh yes, very sure. That's Simon from Torquay in the rear if I'm not mistaken. So technically, not from Melbourne. Though Cam doesn't seem to be objecting.
