Hey guys, first time poster as I am just getting into the stand up world. Had a go on a sup over Xmas, loved it, and have gone and bought a 2nd hand Naish that is 10'5 x 35 1/4 x 5 3/8. Barely used I'm told and looks pretty new. It hasn't got a cover. I gotta couple of questions:
1. How necessary is a cover?......I will just be traveling 1km to the bay each time to use it (for fitness) and then the very occasional 60 minute drive to the surf.
2. Any recommendations on where to get a cover to fit? I live bayside in Melbourne.
3. Prices??? I have already spent $900 on the board and $300 on roof racks so wanting to keep it to a minimum!
Cheers

mate a board bag is an absolute necessity to keep your board in good order and protect it. IMO I find most of the damage to a board happens when stored, not when used and a cover will minimise this. I just bought a new bag today and that was around $170 retail. Most of the major surf accessory makers will offer a bag to do the job, and your local shop can help you select one that fits the bill.

IMO you don't need a board bag for your 10'5" Mana.

You will find it very hard to get a bag to fit that board and I don't think Balin do custom orders any more.

Roof rack pads and good straps is all you need.

I have both my boards in 'Dangerous When Wet' bags (ebay seller), and as mentioned above, a must to save the boards from getting damaged/dinged.

My front strap let go a few weeks back after spending a week sup'ing on the Glenelg river. The top board flipped and dragged about 100m behind the ute (couldn't stop quicker due to towing a 6m boat...which would've made toast of the sup). The nose of the bag copped a flogging, and wore through, but only damaged the board enough to be able to fix with a little 'knead-it'. Without the bag it would've been a major issue.

If you dont do heaps of open road trips then IMO sup covers are a waste of time & money. They are big, awkward, cumbersome and a bitch to put in the car wet on a rainy day.

Mate I use socks from Surf Aids in Byron bay made to order cost$65.00 I just find them easyer I do have bags too but only use if traveling . You just need to tell them what sort of nose you board has . You get used to slipping them on and off .

Hi
From the sounds of it I have the same Naish SUP and I have been struggling to get a cover for it for ages. Custom in Australia you are looking at $250+ plus postage. There was one company in Bali that I was going to get one made with as I'm headed there next month so could pick it up. However I have not heard back from the guy. So assume he is not interested in the business. He was charging $70 custom. I wouldn't care however I travel 3.5 hours to Busselton (from Perth) and want to protect the board.
Let me know if you find anything......

Hey mate,

FCS do a big cover that's 37.5 inch wide but it's 11'6 long and retails at $220.00. Super heavy duty cover and will fit the big naish forsure. However you will prob have a bit of room left at the nose and tail when it's in the cover.

That's about the only cover i know of that will fit the Naish 10'5 x 35.

Good Luck.

Hi
Not sure if you ended up getting the custom made cover. I was able to find someone who would make a custom board cover for the Naish Mana (big board).

I was heading to Bali on a family holiday anyway so could pick it up whilst there. He charged $60AUD and I'm stoked with the result. Good quality and fits perfectly.

I'm one for buying local but I just couldn't afford to spend hundreds of $ on a cover.

Got it from Redz Surf. He is a board shaper. Well worth the effort if you are ever heading to bali.

Got one for a 11'6 NSP and fits it perfectly. Cost was about $220 from SHQ, plenty of handles on bag and makes it easier to move it around without damaging the board. Great investment.

I'm a fan of board covers for two reasons, stops damage while in storage and also protection from the sun while on the roof of your car,on the way home after a surf you may have a few things to do and a board in sunlight for any length of time is not good. You pay a grand or two for a board so whats 200 on a good quality cover.

^^ Mac's right you pay too much for boards to let them get damaged.
