Nice to see a positive article about SUP in a surfing magazine.

Here.. http://www.surfermag.com/features/the-last-supper/

The article ends with:

"And since prone surfers represent the vast majority and were there first, it is my opinion that SUPers should stay clear of crowded, or even semi-crowded surf spots."

Cars were first on the road, so should all motorcycles just stay away from traffic and highways? I hate driving behind motorcycles. I've seen them do crazy, idiotic things right next to me, but I still share the road with them. Not everyone is crazy but I try to watch for the idiots.

Another analogy would be the separate but equal rights for blacks and whites in the USA fifty years ago. That didn't workout too well.

Maybe not the best analogies but that's not a positive outlook on SUP. Not until everyone understands the need to share and be safe. Which will never happen.

Edit:
Just thought that I don't read many surf magazine articles and that very well could be the best and most positive outlook on SUP they've ever had.

Positive my ass, what he was basically saying is sup is fine as long as you find a break all to your self and as soon as a prone boarder comes within half a mile you should move on.I liked his generalizations about Alpha males and fat overweight middle aged blokes , most stand up paddlers i see would be twice as fit as the prone guys

I agree, now be honest with yourself and think how many standup paddle surfers are competent enough to surf a crowded lineup, not many, they are a minority.

"the prone surfers who were patiently waiting their turn" i like this statement; sounds like there was only a couple in the water maybe not a very crowded day at this spot. From my experiences when there is 10 or more in the water i did not see people waiting patiently. If you where you could be waiting a very long time for a wave. The utopia of prone surfing hey

They shouldnt use the term line up anymore as nobody does it, wave comes and if you are lucky you are on the inside and nobody snakes you, but they will drop in if they think you are too deep and "I didnt think you were going to make it, mate".
Yea right

What if I hang further out on my 12'6 and pick up early due to the glide of my PSH ocean hull paddler. Is that sweet ?

I take the p*ss out of sups in the forum. Its fun. Sorry. I would hate to think it was in any way shape or form linked to a kind of racism slant. The fact according to the beast is, if you surf well enough no matter what the craft a bit of respect will follow. Show a bit respect to the bloke next to you no matter what craft he choses to ride that day, goes towards having a more pleasurable surf.

I normally surf with a bloke who rides a sup and rides the big beast well. we get along like a house on fire. I don't know his name but we are friends. i see him at the beach all the time. Today there where three or four blokes out struggeling a bit on SUPs but there were also a crew of proners learning the trade.

I thought the article was a bit harsh but i supose proners like that and thats who is buying the mag.

Personally, I don't see a place for sup in crowded line ups, unless you are super skilled and can handle stink eye. The boards are too big, legropes too long. Last thing you want to do is injure anyone else.

I enjoy SUP 'cause I generally don't have to participate with the hoi polloi in the popular breaks - I get enough of that catching public transport each day.

Sup gives you the freedom to surf those out of the way places away from the crowds. In Vicco, there are still plenty of good breaks around, provided you wake up early enough, not scared of cold water and are prepared to paddle a little bit further. Still nice to be in screaming distance of others though.

Face facts fellas - overweight bald oldies are second class citizens. Deal with it and paddle to the next break with your retired mates 1km down the beach and have a blast.

No Matt, haven't got one as I exceed the weight limit by 20 kg's. I fit neatly into Adolf's stereotype of fat, bald SUPer with GoPro on head. 14fter would be nice tho.
