Just spent the day lolling about in the South China Sea about half an hours drive from Nha Trang. Few nice little wind swells pushing through. Wish i had my 11'6 with me, would have freaked the locals out.......like they are not freaked out enough by a 6'2 110kg westener splashing around. Ha.

Yer DJ. Got some pics of the locals in these crazy cane boats that are a lke a bowl made out of some sort of woven cane and waterproofed with tar. One guy stands up and paddles and up to four others hang on for dear life. I hassled em for a go but they said i would tip it and it costs 1 million dong per cane boat($100 aus dollars) so i can understand them saying no. Will try to upload some photos soon. Oh, BTW, VietNam ROCKS!

Hey Drewsta,
If you make it to Con Dao Island, 180 km off HCMC (Saigon) you would most likeley see a SUP or two around one of the quiet bays around the island.
My fab Uncle John, a construction Manager on the island and a frustrated longboarder, took two SUP boards back there in November 08, to fill nn RnR time, and love it. The locals are having a go too. SUP vietnam won't be long.

Rock garden spa resort up from Mui ne at Phan Thiet has some good size surf.
As its name indicates though there are lots of rocks (boulders) on the shore. There is a small beach you can launch from and it is very consistant surf.

Can't help but be a bit political here. '

If you have a chance drop into the orphanages and see the end result of the use of agent orange.
(the chemical companies deny responsibility)

They claim they are not responsible for how people use their products!

I have seen cot after cot, ward after ward (sometimes two to a cot) of children with hydrocephalus. Heads like basketballs, literally. Like huge water melons

They estimate three million children are affected.

That's right, I said three million. Three million kids

The chemicals are not water soluble and can sit in the soil and transfer to the fat of fish and other animals.

It is heartbreaking what has happened up there and anyone would do well to assist in any way they could.

We went to Vietnam last April. It is well worth going.Amazing place. The people aren't jaded by tourism yet.We chatted to teenagers who had never met westerners before.
Loads of highlights but the surf wasn't one of them.I hired a mini mal from a cafe at China Beach an had a surf. I lasted two waves. The water was grey water.Plastic bags in the line up etc.The good bit is that the locals still stopped to watch.
When you get to Mui Ne watching the Russians is top sport. They drink Vodka and lay on the beach all day.Fantastic sunburn!
I say go but leave the watersports at home.
