Hi

About to take the SUP on its first plane ride.....any tips regarding the paddle would be much appreciated. It has a half bag for protection - covering blade and a little way up the shaft only. Should I cover it a bit more? Should I place the paddle in the SUP bag? Although this maybe a little tight. Or do I just throw it over the counter and pray it gets there in one piece and not 2 or 3?

Thanks, Kev.

Make sure you wrap heaps of bubble wrap around the whole paddle ,put it in the cover the paddle come's with and send it down sepratley .This way it won't get crushed if it's in with the board.
Also we can load it in the aircraft can along the top of the bags so it doesn't get damaged!

G'day ted the Kiwi
Get a paddle bag made & you will have no problem (don't put blade in SUP bag or you will find blade broken or a blade impression molded into your SUP. I got a custom bag made that fits 2 blades in it, to easy. All good this blade bag has done 3 international tours allready.

Thanks Downwinder - I knew you would be all over this one!!!

Cheers for all the suggestions - will go for the large bubble wrap option as I have left my run a bit late to get to a shop for a specific bag.

go to the post office / office works

buy a roll of the bright orange FRAGILE / GLASS TAPE....

go crazy with the tape all over your paddle and board....

best $5 u spent.

otherwise your paddle could be the target for some airbourne cases

Kristi has used a combined btrd bag ( its just a generic paddle bag corbin etc rebadge them $70.) and lots of fragile tape all over it. double bag the SUP or bag and bubble wrap with lots of windy miller fragile tape bright orange. virgin blue / pacific give you an extra 5kg sporting equip allowance on domestic and i think 10kg international?

Worked on 3 domestic campaigns.

Thanks for all the advice.......the paddle survived both journeys fine with the bubble wrap. It was an incident free trip except that Jetstar do not like to take SUP boards - or anything over 6'4" for that matter as they pack their smaller planes with 'cans' which created a definite problem with the 9'5"......good old Virgin Blue came to the resuce though and shipped it no worries. I would strongly advise to check the fine print on Jet Star before booking with them!!!!!

A mate of mine works as a baggage handler at the airport.

By the sounds of it they are very difficult to manouvre through the opening into the hold. I would use extra packing around the rails, use a tight fitting bag with handles either end, just make it as easy as possible.

Score any good waves?
