I was thinking groups of people in general, Ive seen a few people do silly things on them recently. They defo give them selves a bad name doing dangerous sh!t.
In saying that Ive surfed with a couple of guys that were great, kept to them selves, didnt surf through packs and paddled around the break. So not all bad.

Good idea. Seen it too many times taking my kids for a surf at a certain little known rivermouth at the southern end of Palm Beach Wasn't just SUP's either that were creating mayhem through the 3 surf schools and pack of dads pushing the kids onto the little reform in front of the car park. There seems to be a lot of old blokes having a mid life crisis learning on mals who think it's a good idea to surf amongst the kids on their foamies rather than paddling out the back too. One of these flappers hit my 10 yr old daughter a couple of months ago and she's wanted to surf there since.

hmmm sorry but groms, women and beginners will always go to point waves here on the GC....it should not be stay away if they are there, it should be stay away if you are not capable of controlling your craft.

At risk of copping the formidable, relentless wrath of Mr Husq on this one.....

At that little known river mouth mentioned by the Raging D is quite possibly one of the best learner waves on the planet. Not out the back with the big tough boys but inside the rock up the creek. Sometimes even on a high enough tide it's right near the carparks. It is useless unless you are under 30kgs and have your dad pushing you into them. It's amazing for the kids to see each other doing it and gain their own confidence. It's surfing Pre-school. My daughter loves it. It's far more forgiving than whitewash at any beachy. I don't know why any grown person would want to ride there anyway. Inside Laceys is a far better learning ground for grown beginners.

I am talking about Groms here, not adults (women, men, beginners). There are very competent SUP surfers at my local break, that chose to not surf near groups of grom's for the reason that as good as you are, the ocean is unpredictable, and a 8-10 foot SUP with the volume they have can do some very serous damage to a 4 foot grom.

Points are also very different to beaches. They are usually long and drawn out waves, so people can spread out, but at beaches where it is usually concentrated in one area is where the issue is.

There's a certain menace around North Avalon and Kiddie's Corner at Palm Beach (a paparazzi photographer type) that has had a number of run ins with groms - gave one kid at N Avalon 10 stitches to the head and hit a girl at Kiddie's Corner (her partner got the police onto him for that one) and I've seen him NUMEROUS times paddle around out the back on his 12 footer on tiny days and careen through on sets, with very little control, through the groms surfing Suck Up at N Avalon and kiddies-he almost always out there-and only when it's small grommy waves. It's only a matter of time before another child is injured by this clown.

He's an absolute pest and a case on point.

so once again we are starting to define what is important rather than blanket statements. I know the spot CMC and Rager are talking about well. And agree with what they are saying about this type of spot. If you dont know it, it is wasit high water, that parents etc can push their kids onto and where surf schools operate. It is not impossible but would be very weird to catch a wave at the point and end up here. Good surfers ususally avoid these spots.

The types that are going here are clueless or learners. If they are on big craft they need talking to.

I caught some of my first ever waves in the creek mouth, on a sup. But was half way between the beach and the groin. I was more worried about hitting another than anything else. That is why I started with help and in areas not as popular.

I understand where you are coming from regarding a beach break and groms. But sometimes the only decent breaks will have the crew and this will include Groms.

how young are you talking?
what skill level are you talking?
what age is the cut off?

There are surf rules and etiqute for a reason, If we all follow these with common sense A LOT more accidents would be avoided.

BTW, regardless of age or sex, it is usually the more skilled surfers that are avoiding a potential accident that has been initiated by a beginner.

"get over it" ????? Say that to the guy at Nth Av who had to carry his kid up the beach with a 10 stitch worthy gash from the very type of sup'r we talking about here.

The purpose of this post was not to tell people what to do, was to make a point and hope that some of these gonzo's may read this forum and see common sense.

Because if people continue to do it, it will end badly eventually and makes it harder for the guys doing the right thing.

You have brought a very valuable idea in to the light. I think Pete's point can extend to be mindful when entering the surf, on all equipment ... even body surfing ...

As a newbie (possible kook), I struggle to sup near others anyway for fear of causing injury. Spent last week in Lorne and a lot of time at the beach with my kids - the main beach was packed and looked good for some small right-handers. After paddling around looking for gaps between the hundreds of kids/adults on foamies (bizarre sight by the way, 20 or more 'competent-surfer-looking' people trying to catch a wave, with most waves going to the beach empty), I caught a couple of small waves, but gave up soon due to the amount of swimmers and surfers paddling across in front of me, generally when that one in 10 set came through! Had to settle for a paddle up the coastline catching <1ft runners instead.

PM, I value remarks like yours and only occasionally respond because you cop so much flack if you dare to be a reasonable person rather than a self centred fool. It is good to see people with sense writing decent things in this forum. I can almost bet that I will get a roasting because I agree with your comments. Remember that there are reasonable people out there who don't do stupid things.
