Several beaches in WA's south-west have been closed this afternoon after a big shark was seen less than 20m from the shore.

A surfer reported seeing a large shark near Huzza's Surf Break in Cowaramup Bay at 3.10pm today.

As a safety precaution, the Augusta-Margaret River shire has closed the beach and several others nearby for 24 hours.

Geez, definitely going to make me look around next time I head west back home. Surfed the SW for 25 years and never saw one shark. Seem to be either increasing in numbers or coming in closer looking for food. My family live in Dunsborough and are keen fishos, my bro reckons he sees big whites all the time and said it was never like that years ago. Said its particularly bad around whale migration and salmon seasons.

Im not convinced it wasn't just you donning the old shark fin suit to get rid of the school holiday crowds.

It was a whale dressed in a shark suit hiding from the jappaneese fishermen.
