I recently bought a second hand Naish Carbon/Wood Veneer (Bamboo) paddle and need to shorten it by about 75mm. I'm not sure what glue was used originally. Can anyone advise me on how to go about it?

You could try soaking the paddle handle in some boiling hot water for a while.. and then see if it will twist off.. or.. maybe a hair dryer.. or if that fails...

Just get a hack saw and saw it off at the length that you want.. Then cut, poke, grind, pry until you get the piece of shaft off the handle.. and if you butcher it in the process see if your local Naish dealer can order you a new handle.. They shouldn't cost much..

Thanks a lot David. I read an earlier topic where a hairdryer was used. I hadn't thought of hot water. Will probably have to resort to cutting and grinding if heat fails. Luckily the paddle is long enough to try all in turn then insert a new handle if required.

I've just done this earlier this arvo (starboard paddle, not naish but the principle is probably the same). Boiling water didn't work so I very carefully used a heat gun on low heat to soften/sweat the epoxy. Worked beautifully, the handle just slipped out with a bit of a twist and pull. I reckon a decent hair dryer might do it. I expect results depend a bit on the epoxy used and I'd go VERY carefully with the heat if there's a clear coat on the shaft.

Thanks aspaceman, I'm planning on trying the hairdryer tomorrow when my wife is at work. She's been a bit possessive about certain things in the past, I really can't see the problem with using her dressmaking scissors as tin snips. Fortunately there isn't a clear coat but a pattern etched into the shaft. I don't think heat would damage it. If the hairdryer doesn't work I might try a heatgun on low as suggested. Thanks again, I appreciate the help.
