Mark's third version of his new SIC Standamaran S-16 looks pretty cool.

More pictures from Evan's site here.. www.standuppaddlesurf.net/2010/04/03/s-i-c-s-16-sup-standamaran-version-3/

I'm looking forward to seeing a vid of it catching bumps.. It's still not my cup-a-tea but it's growing on me..

it interesting that the two hulls seem to be splayed wider apart at the front, that looks like it different from the earlier vid and them now have steering in place
cheers

That splayed apart bit is probably an optical illusion.....called vanishing point?

Would the gap in the middle be a serious problem for riders used to centralising the back foot when turning? YoU would have to adjust to that very quickly!
The deck gap would greatly reduce wave interference/drag.
DJ......I'll make one up....what colour do you want Knoby Rash yellow?

I agree about the optical illusion.

That thing's not going to foot steer.. IMO.. The rudder is the way to turn it and having that gap is a sure way to teach you not to centralize your rear foot..

I wonder if he's trying to get some flex between the two hulls by having that gap.

Thanks Dean.. I know you could make something equally as good as Mark's.. If only I had the money I'd take you up on that for sure..

the only thing i can see that i might have problem with is the overall width and how paddling technique would have to be altered.the general thinking is to have your legs no more than waist width apart. i don't see that as being possible. also you have to reach a fair way across the board to get the paddle vertical. i'm sure they have considered this, but any thoughts from any one?
cheers
ps ok i thought they might have slightly splayed the hulls to stop the thing from pearling, but looks like the photo only gives that appearance
pps are you guys sure about the splaying. if you look at the bars, they are mounted in the centre of each hull, but the front bar is a lot bigger?

Overall width of the old version was 28", this is probably the same so no issue with paddling width. Pretty sure Mark has a fair idea what he is doing, after years of producing outrigger canoes and cutting edge SUP boards. Think I remember reading that there were something like 28 iterations of the F14 made before that went to a mold, and because they constantly produce both planing and displacement custom boards for the best riders in the world it is an incredible opportunity to learn as you go. The shape of this thing looks simple but I can imagine the rocker is very critical to get it to track, ride swells and not broach, knock one up in the shed and expect it to be as good, sorry to be cynical.....

hi, i'm positive he knows what the go is it's got to be wider than 28" when you like at the board in relation to himself.would be nice to know for sure the width. you can see its a weapon. you wouldn't go making a mould useless you have it perfect.
cheers

Well said Jonathan C
I cant' comment I know Mark Raaphorst is truly a Master Craftsman when It comes to SUP racing designee he has a very good eye for detail. Just like my good friend Sam Egan can shape a short board. A few years back Sam Egan shaped boards for 35 of the top 44 WCT surfers know that is telling you something! I said to Sam once hope you live for 200 years so I can always have good boards. Sam Egan gave big complements on Marks shaping technique when I showed him my F-16
( all surfboard shapers are good at shaping a curtain water craft ).
My top 5 shapers in there pacific feild
Sam Egan - surfboard shaper
Mark Raaphorst - racing SUP
Woody Jack - surfing SUP
Adrian Birse - 18ft Paddleboards
& the bloke from Newcastle that shapes the - 10'6 Kracka Lifeguard board
see ya in da ocean
hope to see you at the salt water festival
