Board shapes, weights & sizes are changing fast with huge debates over what’s best. Production boards all tend to be 2+1 but with boards getting so high performance the big fin box is just slowing you down especially when you only have a 5" fin in it.

The way things are moving I think sub 9's boards will come out as dedicated thrusters & Quads or maybe even a twiny?

What do you think and what's your preference of fin layouts, mines a Quad

Piros.

Go 5 the custom one I have just 'aquired' has this setup using futures and full centre fin; no extra drag evident and you can fiddle to your hearts content. new PSH will come with them soon from horses mouth.

I usually prefer a 2+1, though I did like the way the Naish 9'6 quad surfed. I'd like to try a thruster setup. Twinnies are too skaty for me.

Blane made the board but that is all I can say.
He is planning to do 5 fins so people can play; however he said that after a few beers so it is either true and he should not have told me or he was pulling my leg. I hope it was the first.

It will add a bit of weight but I don't want to open that can of worms again.

Quads are not everyone's cup of tea - might be win loss situation with some liking and others being put off. He will have to weigh (sorry) it up.

I agree Hilly, quads aren't for everyone. You either love um or hate um. I prefer the thruster or 2+1. Suits my style with rail to rail shortboard style surfing. Some guys love quads. What ever floats your boat(or should I say SUP)

Had a go of a board with a thruster set up all round[thanks Rich] and found it changed direction to much after only a couple of paddle strokes.
Is there a technique you guys that are using this fin setup use when paddling onto waves or maybe there just good for when sitting right on the takeoff point.
Cheers,
Camo.

The thing I like most about the quads is the pump and drive , you can get the same with the 2+1 but in sucky sections I like the feel of the quad.

Quads hmm,I was a little spectacle coming from the old single fin day's.Showing my age. Then the twin fin evolution and man it was nuts and loose. Then came Simon Anderson and whacko. So I've been on the the three fin version ever since. Come shortboards and longboards and sup's
Quads, well I thought it was another gimmick, until we ordered a Quad shortboard for my son and I can only say he rips on it way more than his Thruster made from the same manufacturer. Thanks Dan.

Gimmick some one said ? wtf Yeh i have orded a custom 10' sup with Swallow tail, from a goldy shaper, the 5 fin choice does me, single, twin quad triple gotta be all good, i want a choice according to the conditions.
Surfed twins a couple of (dozen) years ago, love the feel, though put in a single fin on a different day and the feel is unreal as well.
I think PIROS it depends on whats gunna go blow your hair back on the day, eveyones different.

I have the 5-fin options setup. I have ridden the board as a twin/tri/quad/quin. For a while, I liked the grabby nature of the quin, but have settled on the tri. SA knew what he was doing...
I am glad to hear that BC is going to incorporate the 5-fin option in his boards. The versatility will allow for experimentation that will accelerate the evolution of design and performance.
Though I advocate doing business with the local shaper, I must admit, BC's new lightweight custom shortSUPs look like the kind of boards that I am after. At least he is listening...

Piros,
To answer your original question, I think you are right about dedicated setups for those who have done their homework. Now that I have experimented for over a year and a half with my 5-fin option, I am actually inclined toward getting a glassed-in thruster.

your spot on there, those customs look the goods,i reckon it must be hard with the turn around of the bulk produced boards to evolve the new ideas and keep the punters happy.next year will be good if the naish 2010 range is anything to go on.

J-stroke probably isn't the right term , once the board starts to track but you won't to stay on that side you simply place you paddle out a little wider on the start of the stroke and pull towards your foot to pull the board back around or push your stroke out wide (not straight) to push it back into line ...make sense ? that way you can steer the board both ways from one side.

You should tape over or fill the ones you aren't using (with something removable) to limit turbulance and drag.
