Hi there everyone...long time lurker, first time poster on here. Being pretty new to SUP, this forum has been a great source of information and helped in board selection, techniques etc. Availability of demo boards from generous retailers and friends has also been invaluable. Thanks to all.

Back to the subject. We knew that SUP Vic had an day on the Yarra, but with the wave buoy at 1.5 - 2.2 metres, north easterly blowing and favourable tides, a dawn patrol was in order.

I was christening my son's Naish 9'5" Mana, which he picked up yesterday, but had only paddled it in the Bay. I wanted to see how it would go in head high or above surf. So we had the little fat banana and the quad fin banana comparison on offer.

And we got some reasonable waves!

As I had the camera for most of our 4 hour session, there aren't many pics of the little fat Mana, but I have to say that it went pretty well. I took a couple of set waves, one which closed out part of the channel, and I was wondering whether it might cavitate, with the wide tail, but it held in well and was surprisingly manoeverable, too. It dropped off as the tide dropped, but here is at least one pic of the Mana.

I will post a few more photos later...when I resize the images, so they upload more quickly.

And I'm sure the barbecue was fun, too.

Great stuff Ross.. Welcome to the Breeze.

I'm sure most of us would have rather been doing what you did but when you advertise a barbie you can't not turn up.

Great pictures.. Was that big left or down at the island?

Thanks DJ....here is the view looking across to the Island. There was a fair offshore early and some cross chop, so the Mana's 31" width made things a lot easier.

There was a bit of a crew out.

But there were enough to go around.

Although, we copped a few of these, too.

G'Day Ross,
the east coast open beaches were looking good on the surfcams this morning,
looks like you scored some good waves from the pics,
do you get down that way often,
the next supvic event may well be a surf day,
so expect to see you there,
Cheers,
Camo.

I should have headed there this morning - it was clean at Inverloch but closer to waist high. Great photos by the way.

yeah right cold coast was pretty crappy. you didn't miss anything down this way. south east swell, north east tending to southeast, wind swell, how about a moderate to fresh onshore so that we can go windsurfing, south easters just too much hard liek hare work, the river would have been good, here comes summer

Hey Rosscoe, welcome!

I was wanting to do the exact same thing early before the BBQ as well but had to go cheer on a friend in the marathon. Looks like you got some good ones! How was it breaking with the swell being so south?

Hi there Camo. Yes, I promise to come to the next SUP Vic event, especially if it is a surf day. For us SUP'ers in Melbourne, it's great to have the Bay for flat water and downwinders etc but you gotta take when it's on down the coast and you're not at work.

And yes, I usually surf down the east coast, it's closer from where I live, although my sister has a holiday house at Ocean Grove, so this summer I'm hoping to catch up with Phill, Rich etc for a wave down their way.

Hi Brendan, good to see that you did your duty and cheered on the marathon. I heard that the traffic was chaos. It was breaking ok out there yesterday. As the tide dropped and before the swell dropped off with the tide, a few closed out part way into the channel. But it was a fun session.

Here is a pic of it at dead low tide. For those who don't know the break, it is further away than it looks, so you have to look closely to see the surfers (and 1 SUP, too) in the waves.

A couple more photos, then it's time to head off to work.

Nice photo's! I was a little bummed cos it take a bit of luck to get it light winds and enough swell for it to be good.
Looks like it was good yesterday. We'll keep an eye on it and get some waves next time it's working!

Yeah traffic was mental getting from St Kilda to the yarra.
