Would love to hear everyone thoughts on this idea...

from Gold Coast Bulletin

FORGET Metricon Stadium, the Billabong Kirra Groyne could be the city's next major sporting venue.

Coolangatta councillor Chris Robbins has proposed seeking private sponsorship to rebuild the famous surf break -- and surfwear giant Billabong would consider the idea.

Cr Robbins proposed the plan after City Hall last month dumped its plans to rebuild the 30m Kirra Groyne, which was removed in 1995.

If it gains support the plan would mean having advertising at the groyne, similar to football stadium sponsorship.

Cr Robbins said with the council and State Government crying poor, other options had to be considered.

"There's Metricon Stadium, we could have the Billabong Groyne or the Rip Curl Groyne," she said.

"It's certainly supported by a lot in the industry. I don't think it's out of the question that we could ask funding for that externally within the surfing industry."

She said a council report into the cost of rebuilding the groyne, previously estimated to be about $500,000, was expected back in the next few weeks.

Billabong spokesman Chris Fogarty said the company had not been approached about sponsorship.

"Our heritage is here, the Gold Coast is an important part of the Billabong story," he said.

"We would sit down and discuss it if any substantial proposal was put in front of us. Without any detail it's difficult to comment further."

Kirra Point Inc boss Wayne Deane said he was meeting with Cr Robbins on Friday and would discuss the possibility.

"There have been a lot of ideas rolling around. I need to evaluate it and get a plan," he said. "I've met with (Currumbin MP) Jann Stuckey and she said there's no funding available from the State Government for at least the next one or two years."

Surfing activist Andrew McKinnon said some in the surfing fraternity would have reservations about a sponsorship deal. "The one idea people steer away from is to get someone like Billabong or Rip Curl to do it because it could be selling out."

If Billabong buys Kirra I will burn every piece of Billabong clothing I own. Billabong should give back and rebuild Kirra for the Surfers and not for a Billboard.

IMHO.

Probably the worst sponsorship investment in history.

Apart from some initial joy and being hailed the hero for adding some rocks the wave breaks 5 times on a good year.

Say it cost you 5 million to do. Amortise that over 5 years and it cost you 1 million per year or $200,000 every time Kirra breaks and gets you some exposure.

For that money you could spend it with far greater effectiveness to actually get some return.

Can't see it happening.

Of course add that to the fact 95% of boardshorts never get into salt water and it tells you these guys are not making money from surfers as a majority. Pictures of rocks will not help sell boardshorts and t-shirts in Alice Springs or New York.

Maybe businesses, organisations or individuals could sponsor a rock each. You could then perhaps have an honour board or plaque at the start of, or on the wall somewhere listing the names of those who donated.

Maybe better wording would be 'donate'

If it were a tax deductable donation I'm sure plenty of surfers would make a donation instead of paying some tax

that really ****s me...donations are given because people believe in something and their money is supporting a cause that one believes in....not for a freaking tax deduction...sort of defeats the purpose of donating if one wants something back. besides the good feeling you get for doing something good,is all one should want in return

Maybe so but there would be a lot of surfers paying a lot of tax who don't use footy fields or other municipal sporting facilities so why shouldn't they be able to direct their tax money toward doing something for the sport they participate in? Makes sense to me. It's not feeding starving children in Africa to feel good about it's more of a re-distribution of government funding for recreational infrastructure.

What about if we introduced paid parking at all Gold Coast beaches to subsidize the costs of the rocks on the groin..

(yes, this is sarcasm)

Maybe more wavepools around Yatala to trap them before they get to the coast?

But on a serious note if governments started seeing the money being donated through tax deductable donations then maybe they would take surfers and their financial contribution to society more seriously.

i can see it now, billabong owns the wall and then subsequently applies for a 300m exclusion zone for the "billabong-kirra surf resort" guests only.

Ive personally never got all the hoopla about "fixing" the groyne. From what Ive seen over the last few years its still a fantastic break when its on, and the rest of the time its a really mellow and fun sup break which I enjoyed on my own most days for the last 2 years.
If the money for development is simply to make better breaks for the pros, the I say ##ck the pros - they spend the whole year surfing the best breaks in the world - the majority of gold coast surfers are quite happy with what they have and would probably prefer to see money being put into roads/hospitals and other essential services.
If Billabong have a few million to throw away then hows about building a new childrens hospital or something useful.

Maybe we could have a 12 month Amnesty on SUP's australia wide, kind of a government 'buy back' scheme where people just surrender any boards over 8 feet in length.

With all the money people save on solar rez, ding tape, repair putty, professional repairs, new boards, first aid supplies, ambulance service, medical bills, rehabilitation, lost time from work etc, we could rebuild the kirra groyne and plate it in 9ct gold, then fund a webber wave pool in every city and buy 'street sups' for all those guys who might miss the thrill of being a gondoleir.

12 months without SUP related carnage at our already overcrowded breaks sounds pretty good too

a swear jar, everytime surfer swears at a sup per he has to put 2 dollars in a beachside money collector.

mate we could build groynes and wave pools to melbourne and back with that earner
