I'll be shaping a new board this week and just wanted advice or tips on how to spray a design/colour on it.

What are the options for when I spray the board?
Spray blank, spray after glassing and before hot coat, spray after hot coat and then apply some sort of clear coat??

What is the best paint to use for any of the above options?

Ideally I would want to paint after glassing but before the hot coat so paint is less likely to chip off and it would hide any
imperfections that I leave after shaping and glassing. Is this possible? Does painting before hot coat mean the hot coat doesn't stick as well?

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

Also, where can you get tissue paper for printing logo's? What's the best way to print it?

I think if you spray the shaped blank you will need to be very careful what type of paint you use because some paints will dissolve the foam.

I think you may need to use watercolour paint to be safe.

Doing a filler coat paint job after it's glassed is probably a better way to go because it blocks out more UV and so stopping any yellowing.

Hey Bnaccas, once again I'll just quote my experience - not saying it's the best way to do it, but works as I sprayed my goaties this way for 12 years.

I used Acrylic car paint - the stuff you get in cans from auto one. I would put an epoxy finish coat on after I sanded the board then cut it back with 180 grit. Then spray on white auto paint.

When it was hard enough (about an hour later) I would mask up my design and spray on the colour. Let that set for half an hour then pull off the tape and finish with a clear coat (Acrylic).

I would let that harden overnight then hand rub with wet n dry for about 45 mins then buff with cutting compound. Would come up like glass if you got it right!!

Tends to scatch more easily than 2 pac but doesn't chip and not as toxic - also lighter.

The other advantage of doing it this way is you can use a bit of Q cell in the filler coat which makes sanding easier and less likely to have sand throughs into the glass.

The real art is in the wet & dry hand rubbing and then the buffing

If you are using epoxy then you paint it last so the paint shields the epoxy from UV damage.

I have used Bote Cote on a kiteboard. It is water based and extremely tough. Very hard to sand. I didn't try to get a buffed finish.

A lot of manufactures use a UV resistant epoxy and tint it. Personally I preferred the paint option.

Thanks for the help guys. According to shapers.com epoxy resins now have some UV properties in it so this
isn't as much an issue.

I just want it to look good when finished. I'm thinking I'll add some white pigment into the epoxy when glassing
to cover any blemishes, then spray the outside and clear coat. Sounds like the easiest option.

I might just go a coloured pigment when glassing and thats it, one colour.

the cheapest and easiest way is to just get the spray cans from auto one or any car place just the touch up cans these are cheap and user friendly spray the board laSt after you have finished sand then once sprayed get a clear coat this you can buy same place then a light wet rub to finish also a tip is laminate the board with a white pigment also

Hey brenden
Mate i would go as DTM -add correct amount of white pigment in laminating coat (not sure i think max 5%??? as pigment is polyester base and can react with foam , i tested and was fine ) then clear filler coat, without q cells as it only creates pouristy in surfaces when trying to finish.( if using kinetics epoxy from shapers u can use polyester top coats that are easier to sand but make sure u post cure epoxy at 40 degrees and will full cure in 5hrs, and always wash down with water and white scotch brite pad before top coating over to get off the bloom)
I used clear acrylic lacquer as top coat but added flattening base to give a pro-tec style finish.
For your logo i used to do it on fine rice paper but could not find anywhere so used tissue paper -10 cents a sheet and taped on backing sheet and ran through my printer , it catches sometimes but u can get it. Oh yer and get disposable overalls when shaping as the EPS sticks to your cloths like sh ..
Hope this helps,
PS i have had couple rides on my new board lately in only small waves and it rips,

I used small amount of Q cell in the filler for years with no porosity. Makes sanding heaps more efficent and you can get edges as sharp as razors. Only if you are finishing with paint though. Also I found epoxy finish coats worked a treat without all the prep required for polyester.

Is there any reason why I can't use enamel paint??

Reason being I might do a graffiti art spray job but the nibs on the acrylic spray cans are terrible (wide spread) and you can't change them.

I would still do a clear coat over the top.
