I have just returned from the South Coast region of Sri Lanka. SUPS few and far between in the area but they are there. I'm told there will be more coming so you may find others than these 2.

This joint at Weligama hires out a 9'6" McTavish and you just walk out the front to a very serviceable and fun beach break: http://guesthouse-weligamasamaru.com. The gents running it will set you up and it costs the grand total of $8 a session.

Further up the coast, the surf school connected to Tallalla Resort has a 9" Naish for hire, I didn't take it out though.

I was assured there are SUPS for hire over at Arugum Bay on the east side, but didn't get there

Fantastic place and keen to return one day, perhaps with my own board or better organised. Good luck ... Conditions and locations are certainly made for it.

Don't know how long you are spending there mate but you may want to try and onsell the SUP to one of the hotels or surf shops there as it'll be a real hassle to get it on the plane. I looked into taking one with me and it was clearly going to be a problem.

My wife and I managed to hire a sup in Sri Lanka a few years ago (on the south coast) - it wasn't easy, and supply was scarce. They dropped it off at the place we were staying and then picked it up a several days later when we were done.

The only other SUPs I saw then were ones travellers had brought with them.

I think that's it right there in my profile pic - nothing special, but it did the job.

I told the manager of the place we were staying that SUP would be the "next big thing" and they should buy some soft-top SUPs to rent to guests and even do lessons (they rented surfboards and organized surfing lessons).

No idea if they took my advice - it's been a few years now, so who knows.

PM me if you are keen, and I'll see if I can find the email address of the guy we hired from.

I have just been back from a SUP / surf trip in Sri Lanka. Initially it was hard for me to find gear rental, but I did some thorough research on Google to bump into these guys at Surf Team. They offer SUP packages with different hotels, and best of all, they have a good NSP SUP which is suitable for an intermediate level SUPier. Here is their link to what I booked : www.surfteamsrilanka.com/package/sup-in-sri-lanka/ They also rent SUPs for around USD 20 per day, or much less if you rent per hour. Else, you can find some inflatable SUPs in Weligama. Hope the above helps
