The 12'6 would be the board to go if you want to get in the surf, the 12'2 is only 28" wide and a little unstable in the surf - better suited as a point to point flat water board unless your a super lightweight - it is really quick though
Why would you want a larger board for surfing than point to point paddling?
Boards are
more stable when they are planing, hence they would be more stable in surf than just paddling.
My 5'6" fish is plenty stable in surf, but there is no way I could stand on it and paddle it.
*Edit* Ohh, I think I get it... you have to paddle out in the surf, which is why you need more stability. P2P is on flat water only, which is why you need less stability.
