Has any one given the new starboard Hero (9ft x33inch) a good go. I have been riding the Starboard Drive and Im wanting to come down in length without losing stability.
I weigh 90kgs on a good day and would like a board that handles in the surf.
any pointers welcome.

Have had one session in very choppy crosswind situation & found it handled the conditions well. Was impressed with its stability.....didn't have to be a kneelo

I've had one for nearly 3 months and its the best ride I've had so far. (no ripper though).
I was also was looking for a shorter stable board and for "ME" the Hero is the ducks guts.

I'm about 88 kg and it floats me easy.

The board I had before this one was a 9 8 starie, also a great board but I love the stability of the hero.

If your after performance then there are a lot better boards out there. If your after a traditional ride in any conditions to chest high then the Hero is worth a demo.

I don't know why but I seem to get throu the white water easier on the hero than the 9 8.

Negatives. bit heavier than I was hoping but hey you only carry it for a short time.
And you are back in the pack on take off. Not a problem if your in a line up.

Worth a demo.

Thanks for your experience with the Hero. Has any one given it a bash in head high plus. I have given the Starboard 9ft 8inch (Element) and loved it but thought its ride may be a little to close to my Starie 10ft5inch.

I havent had the 9x33 in the surf but reckon it will be fine if your looking for stability. As you go down in length you lose a bit of that real stable feel but increasing in the width seems to give back the stability. The 9'8x30 also would be a great choice. Im riding this board now and it surfs great. Its very different to the 10'5x30. The 10'5 has the long board feel and easy to get onto waves. But the 9'8 requires a few extra paddles to get on the wave but you can still pick the waves further out. I tried riding the nose on it this morning and it was fun although it sank alot quicker. Still possible though. I think the 9x33 sounds like the board you are really after

Im lost as to why every one here goes for Starboards other the the fact that they are easy to come by...

Dont get me wrong Starboards are definatly good boards and i have a 10.5 drive and i love it for a long board style SUP but in my opinion if you want something purely for surf you should be looking at something that is a short board style SUP..

I have the Drive for longboard style SUPing and a 9.4 Jimmy lewis Mano for when its a bit bigger and heavyer

Again its only my thoughts but if i was you id go the JL 9.9 Mano or similar (a short board style SUP).. You will lose a tiny bit of stabilty but you will get used to it very quickly and once your on a wave its a lot more like surfing a short board then a long board..Both are fun but keeping in mind you already have a Drive i would be going something completely different..

Hope that helps Belly

Thanks for your thoughts on the JL & Mano of which I have yet to try due to the lack of demo days by dealers. I did attend one demo day but believe it or not the dealer only had 2 boards to demo.

I was taking the piss as I was coping it for suggesting big fat noses may not be ideal for real waves.
Paulman pm me to demo my Mano or psh you are welcome to have a go as I believe they are both very good.

I got a question...
What makes people think that a Starboard cant take off on a solid wave or beach break?
Just curious on peoples thoughts?

Yeah there's two Jimmy Lewis reps in Auckland now. Those Manos look really good wave boards. BTW The c4 sub vectors particularly the 9'6" and 10' are designed for the same thing, the 10' is a great board (from personal experience). . I can't believe there still isn't a PSH rep over here?.....Isn't this great, we haven't discussed makes, shapes and models since BP used to rile everyone up with his vast experience heh heh.

The way I see it Belly is its selecting the correct horse for the course. (one board quiver)

Most surfers / SUPers would agree that maybe 70 > 80% of the time would be in less than ideal waves, hence the reason I have gone for Staries / wide nose.

No doubt if I had it the other way, head high and clean, glass then I would be after something different.

Countless times guys have commented that my wave count is way higher than theres, go figure.

I've paddled some great brands and real rippers, for me its about that relaxed traditional feel. Thank Christ we are all a bit different.

I only paddle my 8'5" Pocket Rocket in beach break......um don't actually think there is a problem, it is fantastic. Is a more rounded nose board supposed to pearl or something? I've survived stupid late take offs plenty of times, you just think it's going to pearl but it doesn't.

I think a lot of the feeling that the pointy ripper style board is essential in these conditions is actually just a feeling. Try a well designed rounded nose short board. The reduced length created by "cutting" off the pointy bit cuts down on swing weight, the thing just cranks around when you get back - pity I'm not a good enough surfer to get the most out of it

Im not saying that starboards are bad by any strech like i said i have a 10.5 and i love it..Ive surfed head and a half plus down to ankle high on it and it can perform really well in all conditions but in Shoulder high plus more sucky waves the short board style SUP just really comes into its own i feel..

Again just IMO if you already have a 10.5 with a rounded nose why wouldnt you buy something completely different for those 20percent days when it is really good..

Again thats just my opinion and can be taken or left but at almost 2grand a pop i wouldnt be buying 2 very similer boards seems like a waist to me..

Not saying they can't greeny you rip on one.

People like different things I find the short fat designs tend to catch on chop and steep drops causing a loss of speed. I do not get that with boards with a bit more nose rocker and less volume up front. I also find you have to run from front to back a lot where I prefer a more planted surfing position - shortboard feel compared to mal feel. Less volume up front allows a more vertical approach. Less swing weight up front feels better in turns. Width is critical in allowing a board to go from rail to rail at speed under 30 to me feels way better.
This is my opinion only, based on surfing quite a few different boards and watching others surf them. I wish I was your size greeny I would get an 8 8 by 27 like Keahi's now that looked nice.
