Hey Oliver, just let DJ pick it up for you. That way he could bring it up to the Mambo and we could all test drive it for you!

That's one sweet looking piece of art.

Nice looking board Ollie.
Whats the specs? Thruster? Weight? etc
Are they leg rope plugs in the deck for carrying your paddle?

Yes it does look good. It's a thruster and the specs are close to 10'6 x 30" x 4", I believe the weight to be around 11kg and yes the leash plugs in the deck are to carry the board using the paddle. I'm really looking forward to taking it out.

Crocs will work for a flat water paddle only but I know Oliver has bought this board for the surf so he'll need real grip.

I'm pretty sure he's ruled out wax (and so he should imo) and he's looking into some new clear grip like this..

srfnff.blogspot.com/2007/11/clear-grip-peel-and-stick-traction.html

Or he might do a patchwork deck made out of chopped up normal deck grip.

it's a crime to cover up such a nice looking board...

OLy, b4 u fork out on a deck grip, try out with a thin pair of ankle booties,,, o'neil split toes are good....$50...

i did this on my old naish and it works a treat, ESPECIALLY in the surf....if not better than deck grip, i still use my booties 90% of the time with my jl that has deck grip..... for nose rides but mainly to protect my feet from reef cuts.

downside; yes booties look a bit dorky but who cares and a deck grip will provide extra cushioning for long paddles and maybe from going soft in the stand up area.

hope u get many rides on ur new toy

I've got a feeling that the clear grip is too thin and will probably be abrasive - I think it's less than 2mm thick.

I've had many thoughts about deck grip... lately I've been thinking of a mosaic lightening bolt design from the top of the board to the bottom - will have to sketch out some designs first.

Plenty of ideas here:

But yeah, the wax vrs deckgrip is certainly a bit of a dilemma so I'm not going to rush into anything. Will certainly give the booties a try Windy.

Oli Oli,
No grip? You bought that board to surf otherwise you might aswell just put it up on the wall and forget it. Wax is for shortboards. If you want to see wood, then put on deck grip dots. Booties? Are you kidding windy? Paintings are for walls, surfboards are for surfing so get that board gripped up and enjoy it ASAP....

The grip from booties is far better than bare feet, after my last set of toe dings I am going to investigate booties for full-time summer surf/paddle/kite action.

However, deck grip helps protect you from impacts to the board and your board from impacts from your body and your paddle. If you get out in "real" surf you and your board and paddle are going to take a pounding.

Let us know how the Stonker goes. I am looking around for a new board and maybe a custom is the way to go.

I was sort of trying to say that Brooko in a nicer way but you are right. Booties are not even good when its cold.....
And as for reef cuts, its simple...... Don't touch the reef......

I've never been a bootie person either.. Even through the coldest winters I used to surf and windsurf..besides it was too big a hassle re adjusting the footstraps.

I do wear my Crocs sometimes for either to paddle a board without grip or because some of the areas where I like to paddle gets so shallow that you never know if your fin is going to touch..and when it touches you often have to jump off.

Jumping into knee deep water with rocks is no fun with bare feet..I've had way too many foot cuts and I've learned my lesson.

Crocs have one more benefit when doing stand up.. They're soft and spongy in the sole so you never get sore feet from standing.. Most booties that I've tried are pretty thin in the sole.

Wearing my Crocs also helps if I have to park a long way from the water and have to carry my board over rough ground.. I hate doing the ooh!-eeh!-aar!..

yeah booties are gay, until u get a coral cut, u leave it untreated, then u have to have your foot amputated ..... ok exageration, but i've had a coral nik in the foot, left it too long and been unable to walk, agonising pain and put on the stongest anti-biotics.... docs says if infection gets in ur bone, u r F'd 4 life.

i know i'm a princess that need to H.T.F.U but i've injured my little tootsies too many times from jumping off the board on to rox.

waxing a sup is a buttock pain, messy.
a deck grip on a nice board wrecks the look.

go the booties

booty lover.

Foot cuts suck.

The modern form of the "gay" insult refers to doing things purely for the look at the expense of function.

Crocs are comfy and work well (particularly with socks when relaxing in a Himalayan tea house after spending the day at 5000m). Not gay.

Booties give better grip and protect your feet from rocks and coral and glass and stuff. Not gay.

Spending $100 on designer surfer thongs. Gay.

Worrying that you won't fit in with the tanned surfer guy look. Gay.

Doing stuff because all the cool adolescents do it. Gay.

Riding a SUP because it is fun and works better in 80% of conditions we encounter. Not gay.

Riding a short board in 2' slop because real surfers only ride short boards. Gay.

Booties are essential around here. I surf on a reef a mile or two offshore and if I mess up my tides I occaisionally have to carry the board over several hundred meters of coral to get back in. Not to mention the bad juju that coral cuts will give you. Windy is not exaggerating there.

I have never tried the Crocs (am a member of aforementioned Facebook group) but I do get quite sore feet on flatwater paddles so I think i will have to test them.

I actually prefer to surf a twinny in 2 foot slop than my SUP. Little boards have smaller arcs in small waves so these modern versions of the twin fin have plenty of speed and rip in little waves.
