FFS when is the sup bashing going to let up ! People in the surf have been getting run over and injured by shortboards/longboards/goatboats/clubby skis/jet skis and everything else that floats or is propelled through the water for ever, and there has never been the carry on that we keep hearing about sups. Nothing is going to change - in fact it's only gunna get worse - so if you don't wanna see the carnage or be part of it then use your sup in the way it was intended to be used - that is, paddle away from the crowds and find a nice, safe and less crowded place to play. Don't be a part of the problem - do something positive and constructive and be a part of the solution.

Bizarre, and this just published to - these journo's don't mind getting carried away with their titles .. "Smashed by paddleboard, 'left for dead'"

www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/nocookies?a=A.flavipes

SURF wars have erupted at Currumbin Alley as stand-up paddleboard riders invade the break.

Experienced surf-ski rider Lesley Lambert was slammed in the head, knocked from her board and left without a paddle after she was cleaned up on Saturday.

The Currumbin woman, aged in her 60s, said the paddleboard rider basically left her for dead out at sea.

She and her sister Yvonne Curtis said many inexperienced paddleboard riders who had no comprehension of surf etiquette were creating a hazard on the water.

"I was trying to get away but he kept coming toward me," Mrs Lambert said. "I knew I was going to wear it and we ended up on top of each other and I got a resounding smack on the head. I yelled out that my paddle had broken and he looked at me, jumped on his board and paddled away.

"It was just quite shocking to be left in the middle of the sea.

"If it hit me any harder or it was a little kid, there would have been serious strife."

Interesting comment posted under the article:

"Lesley Lambert Posted At 10:24am today
I am the woman referred to in this article and I would like to set things straight. There are a lot of good SUP riders out there, young and old. There are a lot of NOT good SUP riders and they should be away from the surfer crowds. I had no intention of indicating there was a surf "war" going on - this was meant to be an article on awareness of others in the surf and not paddling off when you have hurt someone or damaged their equipment."

So the gist of this article is that two separate surf schools believe there are too many SUPs in the water yet by their very nature, these surf schools are adding numbers to the line up. Also I note that the self-proclaimed peak body for surf training, the Academy of Surf Instructors, or ASI, has contributed to the debate by advising the authorities that training should be one-on-one. Presumably this is ALL surf training and not just SUP surf training. I wonder if the two surf schools quoted earlier in the article are affiliated with ASI and whether they train students one-on-one or in large groups.

An industry source told me there is over a million SUPS a year going into Europe, it seems a “fad” that has got some legs to it on a world scale. It's a problem that wont being going away anytime soon….. Imagine where we will be in five years!

I can't ignore two main issues with SUPS.

Firstly is the ease of learning SUP in flat water with complete novices then quickly venturing out into the surf with zero surf etiquette and wave knowledge. They are a complete danger to themselves and everyone near them. I hate the idea, but the only thing I can think of to attempt to manage the huge number of novices that will be entering the breaks in the future and creating havoc is to have some sort of proficiency test, license before anyone can sup within a given distance of other surf/ water users. Suppose it would have to be council run with penalties / fines if you don't have a license. It would suck, but somehow the industry will have to put forward solutions or SUPS will face break specific total bans in the future

The other is getting out through the break is the main risk time for other water users. (Given its too big or too late to paddle over standing up) Even with a mal you can at least roll and keep some control of the board. You can't with a SUP as you have to hang onto the paddle and I like a few others on Seabreeze have dislocated a couple of fingers trying to hang onto the rail saver. I am intrigued when watching the iron man racers by the size of whitewater the clubbies can bounce over by sitting back on the board, lifting the nose and then leaning forward as the whitewater hits. If there was a handle on the nose, maybe you could keep hold of the paddle and do it on a SUP? If anyone wants to try and perfect the technique and teach me that would be great. I value my front teeth too much to experiment myself.

a couple of months back i saw a short board rider get his right cheek/head cut open.... my son carried his short board for 15 mins back to the car park....i followed carrying another board. HAPPY TO DO SO THE GUY WAS REALLY HURT

the guy got slammed by another short board rider.... no press.... no uprising

paddle surfing rocks...at least you can see more when paddling out and keep out of the way.

But if a SUP had hit the guy with the same force-you'd probably be carrying his corpse, not his board.

bloody tossers....i was talking to a hugely respected pro surfer just now that rides mals and sups and whatever...... and the media had called him trying to get a negative comment to printtoo......any decent minded surfer wouldn't buy into the crap the media tries to encourage.

Why simple the long and short board forums are NOT political and are all about taking a swipe at one another and rarely serious they enjoy the ride.
