Finally getting to go on a Sup-Surfari. Heading down to South Wales (that's the old, proper South Wales - none of this new fangled New South Wales) It's the height of summer, so I've packed a mac, wellies and a 4mm wetsuit, boots & gloves. The camper is groaning under the weight of boards and associated kit required to keep me, 2 boys and The Midwife in the sea and paddling. I have a video camera, waterproof still camera and a digital so expect a road movie when I get back!! Look forward to catching up on the happenings in Oz in a week. Cheers, Paul.
We were hit with 45 mph winds, lots of chop and a closed out beach break! You may be interested to know that a SB 12'2" is a bit of a handful in these conditions. Lost the GoPro despite a float and a tether in a spectacular wipeout but my 10 year old promises me has some footage from the beach - will upload when I get it. In 6 days we saw no other SUPers. Ina quick early morning paddle in the small cove by the campsite there was just me and a short boarder in the water. The waves were small and mushy so got one of my boys down to get used to riding the board in the shallows. I planted the paddle in the sand (its a cheap one!) so it was out of the way. When we finished the paddle was gone, I asked some old girl walking her dog - seems the SBer took it and threw it behind the slipway with some trashed - nice!! So spent a lot of time playing on boogie boards in the mush with my 2 boys - not a complete loss. (in between watching 13 campers picking up bits of their tents - thanks VW!) Video to follow.
Hey, having landed a week ago in the old blighty, I was waiting in anticipation about how you had caught 3-4ft clean off shore waves with little crowds.
Well disapointment is an understatement!! At least you had some quality time with your kids. Heading off in a few weeks to Swansea for the sup event, let's hope there are waves.!!!
Gareth, if we get nice clean waves you won't be able to see them for boards and bodies. Am heading up to the North East coast in a week or so, bloody freezing but loads of room.
I grew up on the Gower in a village called port eynon. Top spot with heaps of solid reef breaks within walking distance of all the campsites Also used to surf all round Pembrooke way too
If you go again PM me i'll share some local knowledge

Hey,
I would like to know of any places you suggest, used to surfing warm Sydney waves so unsure how a SUP will get received. Will I need a wetsuit hood and booties in September ?
Just managed to get some time to download the pics from Wales, looking promising for the video! This is the only pic Jane got with me on it. Going for a beer, will look at the video tomorrow.
