Hi guys,

I just got back from a week working in Hobart and was just wandering if anyone on this forum is from Tassie? While i was busy most of the time i got to have a bit of a look around and there is some great places to go for a paddle, plenty of inlets bays to explore and what i hear from the locals some great surf beaches not to far away. I spoke to some locals and no one new of anyone who SUPs. I just thought i would put it on here to see if i get any feed back.

cheers

Maybe I am the lone SUPer in Tassie? I haven't seen anyone else around as yet, and get a few strange looks. We have a his and hers Naish 11'6 and are in Launceston, but get down to Swansea fairly regularly.

The SUP is great down here for the mornings where the seabreeze hasn't come in yet (or isn't coming at all!) Also great for the river here, up into the Gorge or down at Kayena (until the pulp mill is built ) Trevallyn Dam is also not bad, going up on the weekends is interesting when the ski boats "help out" with some wake surfing (whether you want it or not!)

Had a great play on the weekend at Swansea 150-200m point break only about a foot or two high but hilarious. I can't wait for winter when the swell picks up and makes it 3-4ft and about 300-400m long.

I guess SUP in Tas makes more sense in winter than regular surfing because at least its warmer to be standing up out of the water!

Been lurking on this site a while and thought it was about time I registered and posted something !

I have been SUP'ing down here in Tas for a bit over a year. I use an Exocet Kona which is more Windsurfer than SUP but it works Ok. I got it to sail in light winds then read on the Exocet site about SUPing. I made myself a paddle and the rest is history. Don't get out very often and vey much still a kook but all good fun. You can see some photos of the homemade paddle and a shot of it in action at Cloudy Bay on Bruny island in Tas here:-

I usually SUP at Park Beach which is about 50 mins out of Hobart and occassionally at Clifton (on South Arm) if the swell is small. Lots of good spots down here for sure. That point break sounds cool Klektik. Hoping to get out on one of the South Arm points maybe when the swell is too small for the surfers to get going. Know what you mean about the funny looks. I have seen photos on the Clifton Beach webcam of someone else down here who does it but don't know who it is.

Cheers
Marlon

Thanks Marlon..and welcome aboard..

Tassie would be an excellent place for SUP'ing.

Up the east coast there's some beautiful spots.

You will have to get yourself a real SUP (board and paddle) one day.

I toured Tassie by campervan a couple of years back and I remember saying to my wife that the point at Swansea looked as though it would hold a good wave in the right conditions, it was flat when I was there. Thanks for confirming. Does it get crowded when it's good?

Hi my name is Ben Kearney and I am based in Coles Bay but also Turners Beach on the north coast and am the agent for naish (mainly kitesurfing) but ride an 11ft6in Naish SUP and also C4 waterman, have a paddle but no boards in yet. So very keen to catch up with any other SUPPERS I thought I might be the 1st in TAS. I am on holidays on the Gold Coast at the moment watching the quicky pro and have been watching tom carrol riding snapper on his LAIRD SUP he really makes my skills look lame, incredible, but has got me inspired to improve. There are lots of guys/gals out here all the time. Swansea and Swanwick at Coles Bay are both brilliant in a southerly swell on the SUP so we should all catch up sometime?

Cheers Ben

Hi Ben

If u want to go for a SUP

There is generally a SUPer out at Currumbin Alley which is about 5 minutes north of Snapper!

I was out there yesterday and it was great fun!

Good to hear that there are a few SUPs down here! :)

I can't believe I missed last Monday, had to go to Melbourne :( I think anywhere was going a bit silly, but pretty much all of the points north of Orford were giving one of those days that only happens a handful of times a year.

The point in Swansea (Waterloo Pt) gets a couple of people out when it breaks but most head down to Rubbish Tips which is the next headland down, but even still, you might be talking about 6 people! :) There are a few other spots further south, Kelaroo Pt, and Christmas Island so you never really see too many people even when it does break.

There are a heap more breaks between Bicheno and St Helens but I'm not too familiar with them so don't know how they would go with the SUP.

I think I'll head down the long way and take a look for the last of the warm weather on Thursday and Friday. Will hopefully get a few photos as well.

The advantage of SUPing in Tassie is when it is 6ºC and the winter swell is pushing up, at least we'll be warmer than those lying down on a short plank in the freezing water!
