My young bloke came to me a couple of weeks ago, kicked the ground and sort of mumbled "Dad, could you teach me to catch a wave?"

I immediately took leave and we are down in merimbula to do the bar tomorrow, shallow and small but a start.

Excellent decision. Family comes first.

Perfect spot to teach him.. You can stand in waist deep water and push him off towards the shore.. I'm guessing you'll have him on your sup board without a paddle? How old is he?

I picked up a freebie sup a few months ago from a guy I bought a paddle from after talking about how my kids are getting into the water/surf/wind scene. I cut down my alum paddle (both blade & shaft) to kids size & we've been hitting the lake & harbour every week. Friday night I got home from work & asked, "who wants to go to the beach for some small waves". 10mins later we were on the water & I was watching my son doing the 'backwards walk' & falling off on nearly every wave...he did manage a couple of small runners & also caught a few on his knees.

Although we haven't spent much time in waves, my 8yo was proud as hell on Saturday paddling down the (glassy) Glenelg River with his dad whilst mum & his 2 sisters sat on a jetty fishing! The feeling was shared!

(BTW - my 6yo daughter ended up catching the only 'keeper' for the day - 37cm bream, angled it in all on her own - awesome day!!!)

DJ he has still water SUPd for about 6months but has never wanted to be in the surf before. He has a 7S uber fish wide and thick so should be good. Actually I might even try it at 7-10 it looks pretty cool. He is 11 I'm thinking that this interest in SUP may be hormonally driven lol, but that's ok I reckon.

Took my 15 year old daughter to Ocean Beach Umina last week for her first go in the small surf (only 1'-2'). She has previously done flat water a few times.

She enjoyed it even though she only really caught only one wave standing and a few kneeling. The rest of the time she fell off and was hit twice by the board causing bruises, but she did not complain. A great start to a new sport for her.

Now, to just get the 20 year old son away from computer games and into the surf.......hmmm.
