I think you're right in that they awarded prize money, but it wasn't advertised prior to the event, so we didn't know whether there would be anything or not. Even though we can't all win something, it's nice for there to be something to aim for when it's costs us so much to get over there with our boards to race.
It's also hard to justify the costs of travelling somewhere to arrive and have only 1 or 2 (if any) other girls to race against (there's no fun in winning/placing by default). Hopefully they'll offer something again this year and it will attract some more girls to compete, both locally and from the east coast and maybe overseas?
Prize money or not, I'm hoping to come over in January, but it would be nice to know whether there'll be at least a few girls to race against or not.
