Check the Trek PFDs out here

http://www.ultrapfd.com.au/default.asp?PageID=63

I havnt used one for standup yet but did a 13km ski race wearing one last month and it was pretty comfortable - I'm going to get one for the race.

Flares (red smoke) are only $16 from Whitworths marine.

thx's guys, they do look good with a open arm area. i see they have class 2 and 3.
cheers

Hi Luke, I'd love to borrow one if that is ok.

Also, I looked on the race website and all I could see was that all competitors must wear a life jacket. What is the difference between type 2 and type 3? I have a type 2 jacket, is this ok for the race?

As far as I can see there are 3 types of lifejackets,
Type 1: The kind you find on ferries and commercial vessels where you stick your head through them and then tie them up around your back. They have head support .
Type 2: Is more of a vest. No head support.
Type 3: Is also a vest. It also has no head support. There no visible difference between 2 & 3. The only difference is that the have different Australian standards ratings.
Last Rotto race there was a real mixture of lifejackets. Some wore them and others had them taped to their boards. I can't recall any of the ski guys wearing them. There was no safety gear checks last race, but that doesnt mean there won't be any this race.
No worries Adam,I'll put one aside for you.

I've actually got two of the paddling vests - mail ordered one that took so long to come I had to get another to stop the water police on Port Phillip Bay locking me up. I'll bring them both over, I'm skinny (66kg) so it's smallish but anyone can borrow it on the day or let me know to bags it.
Cheers,

there is crew that wont to go to the race from the goldie. big costs. we have an issue with having to wear a life jacket as well as carry water. a bum bag pfd isn't good enough, because it has to be inflated accord to emails be the roar crew. now dale seems to think an ocean jacket has to be a class 3 type- the bigger type. we were thinking we could maybe get something slimline with heaps of armpit room!!!!. a big pfd with a say 3l camel pack- how is that going to work, probably get heat stroke at that time of year. i would rather wear 4 leashs and 2 bumbags pfd then wear a jacket. seems to be a lack of understanding as to what sup d/w is about. we are all going to spend a fair amount of money to get boards and ourselfs to get there plus some where to stay, but if i have to wear a class 3 pfd i probably will stay home. is there an answer???
cheers

I've just had a chat with one of the organisers of the race regarding pfd's. Apparently the bum bag style pfd is fine as long as it doesn't have to be manually blown up but inflates with a cord. I don't know if this makes sense as I have never seen one before. As far as other pfd's go, any type is fine as long as it supports your body weight. Last year the ski paddlers had them taped to their board and didn't wear them. This year all padlers must wear them. Hope this clarifies things.

mate , that is great news. they have a pull cord inflate(gas) style setup.a lot of people had them at coffs. i would like to apologize to the doctor organisers for my rash comment. i believe a standard of leash, flare, some kind of pfd, and water should be carried on any d/w for safety and to show a level of responsibility from d/w er's. makes it easier for events if everybody is doing it regardless of skill level
cheers

I stuffed mine up as I didn't see the box with the category you want to enter. It was automatically set to "open" which is $75. Make sure you scroll down to stand up which is $35. But I'm sure you noticed that and aren't as stupid as me!!

I spoke to one of the organisers yesterday and she also mentioned that there will be more info going up on the website over the next few days. There will be 2 ferries going over on the morning, one leaving around 8 or 8:30 and the other around 10 or 10:30. She suggested we would all need to book in advance. I'm not exactly sure what the story is with boards and getting them over is.

For those who havent signed up yet here's some info from the latest newsletter.
Might pay to get in and organise transport of boards to Rotto...

Briefing is on Friday night (15th Jan) at City Beach SLSC club from 5.30pm. We will be loading skis for transport to Rottnest on Friday (location to be announced). The cost is $15 per ski and we will need your help to get it on. Please book now if you want your ski on the boat. Contact [email protected]

Please note in the case of strong offshore winds predicted for the Saturday and little chance of an afternoon seabreeze the race may go to Rottnest. This will mean an 8am start at City Beach finishing at the Army Jetty Thompson Bay Rottnest. All presentations will be back on the mainland that evening.

What happens if we book ferry tickets to rotto for the morning and they then tell us friday night that the race is running the other direction?

I know the forecast can change still but the race looks like its going to be a hot one. 39c temp with souwest breeze 11kn at 3oclock in the arvo.
I think I'll be getting another camelbak.
Hopefully the breeze will come in stronger than forecasted so far.

I just got back from Rotto last week. It costs around $60 for a return trip (not sure how much for a 1 way. I took my SUP (10'8 JL). This costs an extra $10. Had some great waves out at Transits on Friday.

Good luck to all - take plenty of water, carbo shots, sunscreen and be prepared for a headwind for most of the morning.

well conditions at this stage looking pretty average!
Hows that, weeks of strong sea breezes only for the weekend of the race to go 40 degrees and offshore
I know they are considering running the race from Port Beach back to Rotto at 8am and will make the call tomorrow and post it on the oceanpaddler site......hope they make the change

Hey Guys

Due to an aggravated back problem I'm pulling out of the Dr race - nothing to do with the conditions (honest).

As a result the DC12'6" that Gavin (GS) kindly lent me will be sitting idle on Saturday.

If anyone is interested in giving it a crack let me know - I also have a Trek PFD and a flare.

Good luck to everyone else

That's bad luck Shep, good on you for making the decision though, wouldn't want it to spasm or anything half way through.

Does anyone want me to bring over an extra pfd, I've got a Hydraulics brand Race Pro in medium, it can take a camelbak bladder but I don't have a spare bladder. I've also got one of the rip-cord inflating pfd 1, its a chest one, not a bum-bag style.

Cheers,
Jonathan
