Gday,
Going OS with the better half later in the year and looking at options to take 2 boards - a 9'1" and an 8'5". Anyone have experience to share with double SUP bags and Singapore airlines? It would seem to be quite a package with 18 kg of board plus 5kg of bag....lucky there's a 30kg allowance!
cheers

I transported 2 back from Hawaii . Charged $100 extra per board on Hawaiian Air,but really not much of a hassle.

Singapore Airlines won't be a problem. If you don't have a double SUP bag, just tape you 2 single ones together.

Get hold of some graphite slip cloth, as on base or platen of a belt sander, contact glue 4 or 5 x 2-300 mm strips running length ways across the width at one end, then get a webbing strap stitched to the other end for when you don't have a caddy, the boards will drag much easier (as single load) and won't wear through your board bag.
Also... take some 3.6 m long tie down straps so you can strap them directly on the roof of a regular cab, versus paying out for a mini bus.

thank you gentlemen.
I have searched high and low on the web and damned if I can find a double cover for SUP boards. Unless someone has a link, I'll be taping them up I reckon.
might give the graphite a go too, but there ain't no cabs where we're off to!
Cheers and thanks

I thouroughly endorse taking 2 long straps. We use them all the time whether on a hire car or cab. Simply roll up 2 towels and put the straps through the cabin - works very well.
Happy travels

Proper tie downs are worth their weight in gold while travelling. With two boards I would take two sets.

I'd probably keep the boards separate as singles, especially when you say you have two bags. Joining them up might create a very awkward package to pickup, move and transport.

Travelling with sup boards is not as difficult as you might expect, the only problems can be trying to move them around in very crowded airports and moving through some of the roped off airport lines, they are not scaled for a dude carrying a 9ft plank.

Are you taking paddles as well? Trick here is to go to the hardware store and get a length of white plastic reticulation pipe. Find something with a diameter that fits over the shaft of the paddle one the handle is removed. Cover the length of the shaft and tape into place, creating a guard that will stop the paddle shaft from getting crushed in transport. Then you can put the shaft into the board bag, experiment to find the best way to make it fit. Support it with a few tshirts, towels etc between the board and paddle and away you go.

Overall worth the very minor hassle.

Don't forget gaffa tape, spare fins etc.

Ta that's all good. I have a carbon 3pc Werner with a carry case which I had made up specially for it. I reckon one paddle will do, as it' been indestructible so far. Touch wood.

Have taken straps away back in the day before children and my bad back made me take up sup......mountains of boards on hire care roofs....but I digress. We will be straight out of the plane into a boat anyways.

Does anyone know where to get a double sup cover though? Or is it best to just cop the excess baggage charge? Taping them might be an option but I agree it would be cumbersome.

We're off to the maldives, and last time I was there in 2000 and on a short board surfing it wasn't board snapping material at all. So perhaps the one board would do anyway? If it gets upward of 5ft I'll be happy to take my chances!

Just travelled with a 12'6 and 14' race boards. Excess luggage fees, fun in crowded airports and heavy grillings at customs...

Traveling with one or two surf sups is a piece of cake....

Guys
Whats the Problem traveling with a sup I've just returned from the Philippines not saying where I've been but I traveled with a Carbon Whopper and 2 paddles. the board was in a padded bag - Flying Object's, also the Paddles were in covers again from Flying Objects with the paddles I strapped them together with some cable ties (handy little things) Singapore airlines what a great airline I've flown with them heaps of times nothing is a problem board and paddles arrived safe and sound both ways but be careful if you use any smaller domestic or internal flights this is when your problems start with damage

have a good one

Had heaps of hassles with Virgin,Tiger and Jet Star airbuses with 9 footer SUP they just will not fit ,and if your on a cheep ticket and have not declared sporting goods on purchase of your ticket your up for what ever figure they feel like.

Ive had to leave equipment behind a few times, so stay cool with a LOCAL.
What other reason and excuse do you need to go back .

In saying this the larger planes and generally the country of origin carriers are only to happy to take your SUPs with out any problems

Remote places and transport to and from the airport is the worst

USE FULL TIPS

1 Put extra padding approx 1 to 2 foot on the bottom rail oppisite your carry handle shoulder strap.

2 Insure you have a carry handle in the middle of your board bag this is very handy in combination with the shoulder strap and for transporting it on bikes walking on roofs,at hotels and around airports.

3 Travel with some light weight rope VB cord is always a winner and or straps

4 Travel with the minimal amount of bags as possible, insure you got the max for carry on.

Been OS quite abit with SUPs. Most recently 5months in Maldives.

Cover: Prolimit Global Inflateable 280x80... Fits up to 2 x 9'3" x 32" boards. Blow up struts around edge of board to protect rails.

9'3" prowave (wood), 9'2 Allwave (HRS), 2 x paddles, 3 x leashes, sunscreen, tripod and 500ml resin = 31.5Kg.

Clothes and fins in backpack; laptop and camera gear in shoulder bag.

Have flown Malaysian Airlines, Singapore, Garuda, Lion Air (local indo airline) with boards.... no problems so far.

Unfortunately, most surfboard cover manufacturers don't make double SUP covers. Go to your local windsurf shop as windsurfers have been traveling for years with oversize boards and get a cover that stacks up to the dimensions.

my 2cents...

Homeally, mate, that is rolled gold advice thank you. I have looked everywhere for that cover but it seems all that is made now is the 270/80 which is 2" too small for my 9'1". Do you know where to get one? Might pm you about it, too.
Cheers

Hey Tang, would love to know how you go!! I am travelling with two boards in July and that board bag sounds amazing(especially with the inflatable rails!!) but could only find them stocked in Denmark where they are made. I have 2 x 8'5" so the 270/80 would be perfect.

Thanks Wezzy, will do if you pm me your email. I pick up my new 8'5" next weekend and if I can handle it, it might be making the trip unaccompanied.
cheers
