Hi all,

Can anybody give some advice on how to turn effectively, fast and also how to turn without doing a shoulder injury? When races are approx 400m it's quite an important part to get right. I tried the surf stance as well as the neutral position and found my arc for both were very wide and hard on the shoulder. Any suggestions would be welcomed!!

Your havin trouble turning what size board?
Lower your body, sink the tail & sweep the paddle...practice makes perfect

Hi Rea,

If its a surf style board your riding, I would suggest you put a kick pad directly over the center of the center fin box.

When you want to turn get your back foot onto the kick pad, put weight onto your back foot and sink the tail as LSD suggests.

This move will raise the nose and release the rails effectively shortening the board length in the water. Then sweep your paddle wide you will turn with ease in less than a board lenght.

The greater the angle on the paddle blade the better the leverage to allow the board to turn as you can effectively push water with the blade. 14 deg works better than 12deg imo.

My 8 year old can turn my 12fter without any problem at all using this technique and it is a heavy board..

Hope this helps Rea.

Regards

You don't need to change stance much.

Maybe move your back foot back just a little from the parallel stance but that's all.

I think it's all about getting low and doing wide sweeping paddle strokes.

I'll try and do a vid for you that explains what I mean.

Wow that guys looks mean! Thanks guys. That's all useful stuff to try. I'll definitely drop my back foot down and go for the sweeping paddle stroke. Looks like I've got some practicing to do.
