We had about ten people join me on yesterdays Autumn down-winder here in Melbourne from St Kilda to Sandy.. Winter is just a few weeks away now so we need to make the most of it while the water is still warm.. I used my wacky home made GoPro mount on the back of my 14' Glide and it's now even taller and wider than before.. The wind was gusting between 15-25 knots so there were some runners but you had to chase them down.. It was great to see that about half the group were women and it's so good to see them getting into down-winders.. and they're getting pretty good..

Great video. Really enjoyed that one.

The camera interaction, guitar playing and organized car spot at the end were all cool too !

Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff DJ .

I recon with all that windage on the back you are catching more breeze and better runners in calmer conditions !!!!

Stick some glad wrap on the tripod base and pick up another half a knott

I don't transport my board with all that on it.. It takes me about five minutes to put on and about 30 seconds to take it of.

I use about $1 worth of duct tape.. It holds on really well in flat water and for down-winders but I wouldn't want to use it like that in the surf.

Classic footage DJ, is that the music of Seaman Dan, legendary Torres Strait waterman? I drive my kids out of the house with his tunes!

No.. It's the last track on the latest Eric Clapton CD.. and it's a cover.

This vid is great for new people getting into down-winders because it shows so much about reading the water ahead (why I choose to go left or right) and how important the paddle dragging technique is.. (check the back cover of the latest StandUp Journal mag and see Connor and Bart on a runner.. and both are paddle dragging).. also turning across the swells when you can and not going straight down them.. and to only paddle when you have to.. Most people paddle way too much IMO..

Nice words here from Dave Chun (Kialoa paddles)
"DJ, you make it look easy. I like how you drag your paddle to make small corrections, just like steering a canoe. You catch every small bump with what appears to be very little effort."
