Hey guys I have been a bit puzzled looking at the graphs the last couple of days and how they look right now is a prime example. As of right now:

Ocean Reef - 18kt SSW
Swanbourne - 11kt ESE
Rotto - 21kt S
Fish Rocks 10kt SSE

Is that right? I haven't ventured down but is there really that much variation between Ocean Reef and Swanbourne? Rotto and Swanbourne? I'm up at Mindarie and it has been onshore crap the last few arvos but has been showing light ESE for the graphs down at Swanbourne/Freo etc.

The camera at Trigg right now suggests that its onshore there too. If I head down to Cott will I get a lovely light offshore SUP?

Hey Ericson,
I've been wondering (and noticing) the same thing... but this is not just recently. Using the cameras has been good but in chart terms these for me tend to be inconsistent. Rottnest always tends to be different and I appreciate that, but to have Cottesloe different to others on the coast makes me a little sceptic. But in saying that, the data is "useful" as a predictor and comparitor, NOT as gospel. Wonder if the Seabreeze Gods can shed any light on this for everyone??? And if and while they are reading this and I have the chance, is there any further insight into the WA coast Camera situation - as in why are we looking at Hillary's Boat Harbour for???

Thanks h20fly and mottman. Hilly, thanks for nothing [}:)], I didn't realise (and to be honest am still not sure why) it was a dumb question. Obviously there are going to be variations but Ocean Reef and Swanbourne are only about 25km apart and I just thought a difference in direction of 90 degrees was a lot.

Cottesloe is about 1.5 hr round trip for me so if I can be sure its worth the trip beforehand it is preferable.

I know its a moot point as there is no bloody swell anyway!

Sure is a fascinating anomoly, and from my experience a pretty rare event. A localised phenomenom?

Troughy conditions like we're experiencing can sometimes mean the seabreeze floats in & out on the coastline. I've been to woodies, and it's offshore until you get to the turnoff, and then the wind then is onshore!? ... sometimes been on the water & that's happened!!

(Like Rottnest, the Fish Rocks meter is actually out in the water on a pylon, most others are land based)

FWIW we'll often get that sort of variation between sites on PPB that are within 10-15-20 k of each other. Different geography but...

Thanks Laurie, makes me feel better that I wasn't the only one who thought it strange .

Caught my mate out, it was offshore at his work, so he raced home for a wakeboard on the ocean only to get smacked by a 20kt SWer. He still went out . Gave me some entertainment I suppose as I sat in the beach carpark drowning my sorrows about the lack of swell.

Might have to take up kiting.

Not a dumb question the graphs are fallible, I always check the beach. If the wind is in at Ocean Reef it is usually in at Cott but not as strong.

Sorry my bad the comments were due to a few bevies not meant to upset.

You're right mate, no hurt feelings here, just left me even more puzzled thinking there was something everybody else knew that I didn't!

Ive actually seen it. Sat in the car and watched a light seabreeze at Mullaz. Went for a paddle at Cott in nice offshore winds and on the way home drove past Metts and the usual crew were out windsurfing
