And i thought riding a sup made me unpopular with other board riders!!! Imagine how many new "friends" you would make with one of these! haha

A guy had a prototype of this out in Adelaide the weekend before last. Looks pretty rough at this stage but like all things sure it will improve.

For sure that propulsion system doesn't help at all to get a cool style, and for sure tends to uplift the nose of the board.

Here is a response a mate of mine sent me after I sent him the wavejet. I totally agree. Imagine 25 of those in the water at Manly on a crowded summers day......scary.

" Wow, I mean, I hate the idea of it of course for what it's going to do to my sport, but I've got to admit, that is amazing. Can you believe how small the jet is. It looks like you could even install it in a shorter board. And only $2,000! Isn't that about the same cost as an SUP set-up?

Can you imagine how many morons with minimal fitness and no wave knowledge will take to surfing now. Especially since the whole fitness thing has been taken out of the equation. It really frightens me. It's the beginning of the end. Sure, its great getting the waves that nobody else is, only because you're the only one in the water that has one. In a few years, everyone will have one, and then what?

This must've been how they felt back in the day when some smart-ar$e invented the leg-rope..."

Oh I have seen it all now...........scary times ahead for sure. I think that the SUP action at the 6 min mark is just taking the p*ss. Would be kinda fun though - but the issues this may create in the future will not be pretty.

Ted,
Can you really see more people getting in to surfing just because there are some battery powered surfboards? I cant, not at $2000. And even if over the years if the price drops to $1000.

Just think about how good it could be in a few years if it really works, will just mean that you can stay out longer when normally you would be tired or that small waves will be a bit more fun with some added push. May result in a new big aerial era?

I think it could be exciting but only time will tell. I am happy to keep an eye on it at this stage.

The cups half full not half empty.

3d tv and now this...

while I do think the inovation is good the concept is ****......arent the things in life that are worth while doing ment to bb just a little bit hard?

for any of the positive sides to it, it will like alot of things, be abused by the few to ruin it for the many....

and regarding the last bit re rescue....wtf...the first bit was sped up, and if you are going to have the job of being a lifegaurd/saver you better be fit...as most are. And most would out paddle that thing in OUR beach conditons

Not for or against this innovation. Can think of a few times a year when I wish had some power other than my hands and arms to get me back out or keep me on the spot in the sweep.

BUT hasn't SUP already shown us that if you make something easier that it will increase numbers in the surf? I have read here many times that people who have never surfed before now can as they are on SUP, tried it, caught there first wave and were hooked. SUP is much easier than prone surfing and it has without doubt added numbers to the lineup.

At this stage the boards look heavy and horrible to ride, I wonder how they will progress.......

I am all for innovation etc personally I would love to have one of these!! All I am saying though is that if this does become readily available then there could be significant unintended consequences. 2K will not break the bank for lots of people and if its anything like other forms of technology the price will drop dramatically in coming years making it even more affordable. I reckon I would be pretty well behaved on one but I would not say that about lots of others. Also safety issues - what happens when you fall off paddling out and it just keeps going and cleans up a few in the lineup who are looking the other way? What about when the thing malfunctions and can not be shut off? Electrics have a habit of failing when they come under both salt and water. I know they will not be noisy given the electric motor side of things but they could be almost if not be more dangerous than a jet ski. The silent assassin perhaps?
