Hi All,

Wanting to get into SUP, but don't want to fork out for a board I'll need to upgrade in a months time. I surf so not a total beginner, weigh 115KG's and stand 6'5"..... I was thinking the Starboard 11'2 but welcome suggestions from those who know better or can offer informed advice, Cheers.

I would suggest the big Naish 11'6"..You could not go wrong with that board at your size IMO..(you're a big guy at 6'5" and 115kg)

I'm 6'4" and 90kg..I have both 10'6" and 11'6" Naish and use the big board most of the time..It's much more fun..even tho it may not surf quite as good.

I think the 10'6" would be out of the question for you..You could go down to the Starboard 11'2" as a minimum size..The Kalama 11'6" is another option.

The biggest mistake people make is thinking smaller is better and what might be a little difficult now will get easier after time.

You want fun now..not later..and it may not ever get easier..Paddling too small a board for you in choppy conditions is no fun at all.

Which board is right for you also depends on the use..The 11'6" Starboard, big Naish and Kalama are all great allrounders.

The 11'2" Starboard Ultimate Blend and 10'10" Walden and even the new 11' NSP would be great if you're only into waves.

Well that's my two cents worth anyway....Where do you live..and have you demo'd boards any yet?

Good luck with it...and welcome.

DJ

Hey dj , how is it mate? i am coming to melb for 4 days in september so maybe we could catch up. Did a 2 km onshore choppy paddle today just for fitness , hard work but fun. What does the 10 6" go like in the surf ? how wide is it, i may be interested in something like this for the surf, i am still enjoying my 11 6" kalama in the surf and think it is a fantastic all round board, i just want something a bit more looser in the surf.

Hi Brooko..September sound good...To be honest I've only had the 10'6" in the waves a couple of times and both times the waves were only small.

I should catch up with you at Torquay or even Lorne...You can try my 10'6" for yourself...You will be very surprised how well it surfs..It feels like a surfboard.

Oh yeah..The 10'6" Naish..It's 28" wide but the rails have much less volume than the big Naish and Kalama..making it a little tippy but it surfs much better.

brooko

the 10'6 naish surfs so much better than the 11'6 in waves but i find in small 1 foot surf the 11'6 picks up the swell (or lack of swell) better

its all in the rail profile for turning performance

it may be more tippy as DJ said but i find that it recovers quicker from a good old wobble

i think DJ has said that before too

DavidJohn,

Hi and thanks for your constructive reply. I'm over here in Perth so might be best to hit up a few retailers for a demo.
Mainly looking to use the board in the Surf but going for a paddle on a calm day sounds appealing. Anyhow I'll see what happens and thanks again.
